What are the Keb Eco-Shell Trousers?
Keb Eco-Shell trousers are reliable water and windproof trousers that feel lightweight and comfortable. They're perfect for hiking, trekking and general outdoor activity when the weather just can't make its mind up - perfect for year round use in the UK!
What are they made of?
The Keb Eco-Shell Trousers are designed with Fjallraven's very own Eco-Shell fabric.
Eco-Shell is a tough yet breathable material that offers slight stretch and maximum waterproof protection at a lesser cost to the environment. It has a lovely soft feel and is quieter than the usual, rustly waterproof material, adding a little more luxury to these trousers than your average, standard shell.
Eco-Shell is made of recycled polyester. It is lightweight and durable yet requires less raw resources to produce. This polyester has a Hydrophilic membrane, meaning it has a microscopic structure with hydrophilic features. In plain English, the hydrophilic membrane is what makes the pants both breathable and waterproof.
Tiny vapour particles from sweat and moisture can fit and travel outwards through the membrane's pores. However, water droplets from rain are too large to fit through these tiny pores, so although sweat can escape, water from showers, storms and external sources cannot pass through, keeping you feeling fresher and dry throughout your adventure.
The polyester is impregnated with a PFC-free durable water repellent (DWR), adding to the material's water resistance.
Perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs) used initially in DWRs can't break down, so once they reach nature through water waste pumped out from factories, they stay out there and contaminate living organisms, working their way up the food chain. PFC's are suspected carcinogens and have been known to affect reproduction and hormone production in mammals. Therefore, Fjallraven, like many leading brands in the outdoor industry, has now made it a priority to cut out the use of these chemicals to contribute to a greener manufacturing process.
What are their features?
These trousers come with a convenient belt that has an easy-handle buckle and low bulk construction, improving comfort for technical mountain adventures. Two zippered hand pockets give you various storage options, they have inside mesh and concealed bellows adding extra space for items like a mobile phone, hill snacks and energy gels. The mesh also gives you the option to dump a little heat if you're working hard - simply unzip each pocket and leave them open to draw some fresh air in.
Speaking of ventilation, there are also two-way, full length Aquaguard® side zips that can be undone fully or partially for a quick cool down. They're also handy for getting the trousers on or off, giving you freedom around the legs to move around.
The inner, lower legs and the hem is reinforced with extra tough Cordura, as these areas are much more likely to get caught and snagged on rough terrain, rock, branches or from crampons.
