What are the Back Up Hybrid Pants?

The Back Up Hybrid Pants are the perfect all-round shell trousers for various outdoor activities such as hill walking, trekking or a bit of winter bushcraft. They're perfect for packing into your daypack as an emergency layer and could even be worn for cycling to work when it's wet and miserable.

What are they made of?

The Back Up Hybrid Pants comprise bluesign® approved, Oeko-tex certified Gore-Tex® Paclite made of 100% polyester, with an ePTFE membrane with Gore-Tex® 3L reinforcements.

Gore-Tex® Paclite is lightweight and offers optimum packability and breathability. You can easily tuck it into a backpack or kit bag without wasting too much space inside or adding excessive grams to your load. The ePTFE membrane adds extra durability and thermal resistance and has a high strength-to-weight ratio.

Overall, the material is exceptionally robust and can easily withstand bumps and scrapes from regular mountain use.

The material is coated with PFCec-free DWR (durable water repellent) for extra reinforcement against rain and water. The PFCec-free DWR also earns this jacket extra environmental credentials, as it doesn't use toxic chemicals that harm the earth once released through factory waste.

The reinforcement patches add extra durability and weather protection to high wear areas, thanks to their Gore-Tex® construction and ePTFE membrane. 3L Gore-Tex® is less breathable and thicker than its Paclite counterpart. It has a Solution Dyed Recycled Polyester backer, which is less harsh on the environment yet doesn't compromise performance or next-to-skin comfort.

What are their features?

The reinforcement patches are placed on the seat and leg ends, making these areas more resistant to abrasion from jagged rocks and rough terrain, and less likely to catch and tear on bike pedals.

You can adjust the waist using the built-in belt, and cord adjustments at the ends of each leg allow you to keep the weather out and fit appropriately around different footwear.

3/4-length zippers sit on the outer sides, with a two-way opening, designed to provide excellent ventilation. For example, you could leave the bottom half zipped up and the top half unzipped to get more airflow around the legs. They also allow you to smoothly slide over chunky hiking boots and bicycle shoes if you need to quickly put them on in sudden downpours.

In terms of storage, you've only got one zipped pocket on the leg. This helps to keep the trousers' overall weight down and improve packability. It's the ideal pocket for tucking away energy gels and hill snacks to keep you fuelled for your travels. Plus, who doesn't love a good snack anyway?

The Back Up Hybrid Pants are finished with reflective details to keep you visible after daylight hours, perfect for late commutes home or relaxing evening walks with the pooch.

For best performance:

With any new waterproof, we advise you to wash the product with the appropriate tech wash and reapply a fresh DWR to activate the technology and achieve the best performance from day one.

How does waterproof technology work?

Modern waterproof technology often uses a waterproof membrane sandwiched between layers of fabric and a DWR (Durable Water Repellent) on the outer material.

What is 'wetting out', and how does it affect my waterproof?

DWRs commonly get worn down from contact, whether with your backpack or your fingertips. When the DWR wears down, your waterproof product may begin to 'wet out', meaning the water stops beading off the surface and starts to soak in instead.

While the waterproof membrane will prevent the jacket from leaking or water from getting inside, when your jacket wets out, moisture (from sweat or condensation) can build up on the interior, causing it to feel moist.

There's a common misconception that, when this happens, the product is faulty because people believe the waterproof membrane is leaking. However, this is most likely not the case; you simply need to clean your jacket and reapply the DWR.

The easiest way to spot when this is happening is to see if water beads off the material's surface or soaks in.

PFC/PFAS usage in modern waterproof and DWR technology

Most modern DWR technology avoids the use of PFCs/PFAS chemicals.

PFC-free means perfluorinated chemical-free. Companies such as Gore-Tex® are also beginning to eliminate these harmful chemicals in their waterproof membranes with technology like Gore-Tex® ePE.

What are PFC/PFAS chemicals?

Perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs) are also known as forever chemicals and cause environmental harm, similar to PFAS.

PFAS means per- or poly-fluorinated alkyl; these are a group of industrial chemicals that also cause detrimental harm to the environment, often through product and garment manufacture.

These chemicals can't break down, so once they reach nature (usually via factory water waste), they stay in the ecosystem and contaminate living organisms, working their way up the food chain. PFAS and PFCs are suspected carcinogens and have been known to affect mammal reproduction and hormone production. Therefore, many leading brands in the outdoor industry are now prioritising cutting out the use of these chemicals entirely to contribute to a more responsible manufacturing process.

How to care for a new waterproof product

PFC/PFAS-free waterproof products still perform effectively. However, they will require more frequent care (washing and reapplying a DWR) to ensure consistency. We stock various care products for this, which you can browse here. If this is your first time doing this, check out our easy how-to guide by clicking here.
