What is the Bergtagen Lite Eco-Shell?

It’s a lightweight waterproof jacket designed for fast paced activities such as fastpacking, hiking and scrambling in the mountains. It also makes a fantastic emergency layer to stuff into a daypack if the weather is looking unpredictable.

What is it made of?

This jacket is made with Fjallraven’s very own three-layer waterproof material – Eco-Shell. It’s a climate-compensated, durable yet stretchy fabric made from recycled polyester, which minimises this jacket’s environmental impact without compromise.

Polyester is lightweight, breathable and low bulk to enhance freedom of movement and comfort when wearing multiple layers. By just using polyester instead of mixing materials, it 'future-proofs' the jacket, meaning it will be able to be recycled in the future, giving it a great number of eco-friendly credentials.

The fabric is treated with a PFC-free DWR (durable water repellent), which encourages rain or snow to bead off the jacket instead of soaking in. PFC-free treatments are much more friendly to the environment, as they avoid the use of perfluorinated chemicals, which don’t break down in nature.

Surprisingly, the PFC-free treatment plays an important role in the fabric’s breathability. If the fabric was wet, the water blocks vapour travelling to the outside of the material, causing it to feel damp and clammy.

What are its features?

The combination of stretchy materials and engineered cut offers a fantastic level of freedom of movement for intense activities and fast-paced adventures, whether fastpacking, hiking, scrambling or trail running. This jacket’s minimalistic design also helps to keep weight and bulk low whilst reducing the risk of excess material getting caught when climbing or scrambling in rocky terrain.

There’s a two-way adjustment on the helmet that allows you to adapt the fit around different head shapes, sizes or layers. The hood itself is helmet compatible, meaning you can fit it over a hood when climbing exposed routes to protect your face, ears and neck further from the elements.

At the front of the jacket, a two-way, water resistant zipper makes it easy to fasten up or undo if you need to quickly dump some heat. For further ventilation, there are zipped vents at the side, positioned strategically so you can reach pockets on a midlayer underneath, should you be wearing one.

It comes equipped with a Recco reflector, making you visible to mountain rescue teams, should you need them. It's a clever little bit of kit that you won't even notice you're wearing! Recco Reflectors don't need any activation, power or function to do their magic as they already consist of a diode and antenna. Each Recco Reflector is built to last and will not age; it would only ever wear out if it was mechanically damaged. Impressive, huh?

In terms of storage, you've got a zipped chest pocket, ideal for carrying essentials like energy gels, trail snacks or a small GPS device.

Velcro adjusters on the cuffs allow you to adapt the fit around chunky mitts and gloves in colder conditions, alongside the chunky zippers that are much easier to grab hold of when wearing them. Finally, a hem drawcord cinches in dead space around the bottom of the jacket to help keep the heat in and the weather out.
