What is the Taiss Pro HS Hooded Jacket?

Good question! The Taiss Pro HS Hooded Jacket is a durable hardshell built for technical adventures in cold, mountainous terrain. It's the perfect shell jacket for ice climbing, mountaineering and snow sports, thanks to its full feature set and performance fabrics.

What is it made of?

This jacket comprises Mammut's very own DRYTechnoloy™ Pro made of polyamide to provide lightweight durability. Mammut DRYTechnology™ Pro offers breathable windproof and waterproof protection with a Hydrostatic Head of 27,000mm.

The polyamide membrane is based on natural raw materials, earning its bluesign® approved status that ensures it's safe for consumers, the environment and the workers involved in producing it.

Mammut also works with FairWear to ensure safe, ethical working conditions in their factories, helping to protect workers' rights and being considerate and sustainable with their processes.

The shell is lined with polyamide elastane mesh that feels smooth next to the skin and offers some flexibility for enhanced freedom of movement.

What are the features?

This jacket has a helmet compatible hood with a reinforced peak to help draw away the rain from your face. The hood also has a single cord, three-point adjustment system to optimise the fit around various head shapes and sizes.

The front is fastened with a fully waterproof YKK® zip that operates smoothly for minimal faff, allowing you to ventilate the jacket from the bottom or make room for a climbing harness.

There are two chest pockets for essentials like energy gels, hill snacks or a GPS device, and a sleeve pocket for smaller belongings. Inside has a taped, zippered internal pocket and mesh pocket for valuables like keys or a mobile phone. All zippered pockets use a water repellent zip fastening to give them maximum protection against the elements.

Pre-shaped sleeves offer better mobility around the arms and shoulders. X-Vented underarm ventilation provides more airflow when you're working up a sweat. They have chunky zippers that are easy to grab when you're wearing the jacket, so there's no need to mess around trying to take it off in the middle of an ascent.

Cuffs are glove compatible and adjustable. They have high-quality hook and loop fasteners that are quick, easy and accurate to use.

The jacket also has a zip-off snow skirt with an anti-slip grip and double button placket, giving you more accurate, easy adjustment, allowing you to get the fit just right.

Finally, you can adjust the hem using the one-hand adjustable drawcord with Cohaesive® stoppers, which are super easy to use with one hand, of course.

Features:

  • Helmet-compatible hood with reinforced peak and 3-point adjustment
  • Waterproof YKK VISLON® 2-way front for smooth operation
  • 2 chest pockets with water-repellent zippers
  • Sleeve pocket with water-repellent zipper
  • Taped internal pocket with zipper
  • Internal pocket made from elastic mesh material

  • Glove-compatible, adjustable cuffs with high-quality hook-and-loop fasteners

For best performance:

With any new waterproof, we advise you to wash the product with the appropriate tech wash and reapply a fresh DWR to activate the technology and achieve the best performance from day one.

How does waterproof technology work?

Modern waterproof technology often uses a waterproof membrane sandwiched between layers of fabric and a DWR (Durable Water Repellent) on the outer material.

What is 'wetting out', and how does it affect my waterproof?

DWRs commonly get worn down from contact, whether with your backpack or your fingertips. When the DWR wears down, your waterproof product may begin to 'wet out', meaning the water stops beading off the surface and starts to soak in instead.

While the waterproof membrane will prevent the jacket from leaking or water from getting inside, when your jacket wets out, moisture (from sweat or condensation) can build up on the interior, causing it to feel moist.

There's a common misconception that, when this happens, the product is faulty because people believe the waterproof membrane is leaking. However, this is most likely not the case; you simply need to clean your jacket and reapply the DWR.

The easiest way to spot when this is happening is to see if water beads off the material's surface or soaks in.

PFC/PFAS usage in modern waterproof and DWR technology

Most modern DWR technology avoids the use of PFCs/PFAS chemicals.

PFC-free means perfluorinated chemical-free. Companies such as Gore-Tex® are also beginning to eliminate these harmful chemicals in their waterproof membranes with technology like Gore-Tex® ePE.

What are PFC/PFAS chemicals?

Perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs) are also known as forever chemicals and cause environmental harm, similar to PFAS.

PFAS means per- or poly-fluorinated alkyl; these are a group of industrial chemicals that also cause detrimental harm to the environment, often through product and garment manufacture.

These chemicals can't break down, so once they reach nature (usually via factory water waste), they stay in the ecosystem and contaminate living organisms, working their way up the food chain. PFAS and PFCs are suspected carcinogens and have been known to affect mammal reproduction and hormone production. Therefore, many leading brands in the outdoor industry are now prioritising cutting out the use of these chemicals entirely to contribute to a more responsible manufacturing process.

How to care for a new waterproof product

PFC/PFAS-free waterproof products still perform effectively. However, they will require more frequent care (washing and reapplying a DWR) to ensure consistency. We stock various care products for this, which you can browse here. If this is your first time doing this, check out our easy how-to guide by clicking here.
