The Garmin Tactix Charlie is the most feature packed sports GPS in existence; it's hard to convey over text just how much Garmin have crammed into this tardis of a GPS watch. Not only is it a brilliant watch for tactical, sport and general outdoor use, it looks subtle enough to blend in with everyday life, from counting your steps to work, to finding out your heart rate during the day.
The build quality, as always by Garmin, is second to none. The entire bezel is made from a diamond-like carbon coated titanium, ensuring abuse for years to come is handled without a worry. Stainless steel buttons provide a positive feel even with large gloves and mitts, while sapphire glass resists scratches and is far more durable than a standard watch face. Beneath the tough sapphire glass is a 1.2" HD, sunlight-readable display with a domed shape to make viewing from all angles clearer. Another clever feature of this display is it's ability to switch between daytime use and night vision goggle compatibility. Linking all of this to your wrist is a tough, non-corrosive rubber silicone band. For added variety, you're able to purchase a wide selection of leather, metal or silicone bands to fully customise your watch.
Arguably the greatest feature of the Tactix is it's accurate built-in mapping and navigation features. Whether you're heading out for a day in the mountains, a training maneuver or a walk with your dog, Tactix Charlie's built in mapping allow you to track routes, navigate your way along a piece of unknown ground, create new routes, follow current routes and mark locations for a favourite spot, campsite or bothy. In addition to this is an altimeter, barometer and compass to fully immerse yourself in mapping heaven. The altimeter accurately measures your altitude along with total ascent and descent to allow you to plan routes more accurately, while a three-axis electronic compass keeps your bearing, whether you're on the move or standstill.
Linking to it's name, the Tactix Charlie includes a set of Tactical features which can't be missed on such a high end piece of equipment. The watch features Jumpmaster activity projected waypoints, projected waypoints and a dual-format GPS coordinate data page which supports the display of MGRS, degrees, minutes, seconds and more.
Monitoring your performance has never been so satisfying. A first for serious athletes, Tactix Charlie includes Garmin's Training Status software; an intelligent and adaptable piece of software which monitors your training and lets you know if you're on the right path, making progress, falling behind or overtraining. When setting a goal, Tactix Charlie will let you know the benefits of certain activities, how your training is improving and how certain activities are improving your limit, whether it's a sprint time or max rep. As if this wasn't enough, the watch will monitor your last seven days of training and will compare it to the optimal range for your fitness level and recent training history. If you wish to change your workout and require a little motivation, Garmin have their own advanved workouts on their Garmin Connect app. Lastly, a built in heart rate monitor (in the watch, not a fiddy chest strap) lets you monitor your heart rate while on the move or sat still. It isn't simply for monitoring yourself though, Tactix Charlie will use your heartrate during exercise to provide the amount of calories burned, your stress level and to asses the level of exercise that your body is ready for.
As if being one of the best tactical and general outdoor watches available wasn't enough, it throws full Smartwatch capability into the mix. When paired with a compatible smartphone, Tactix Charlie will inform you of notifications, emails, texts, calls and alerts, whether you're simply sat at a desk or half way up a climb. As well as this, your workouts can be automatically uploaded to Garmin's fitness community and shared via social media networks through Garmin's free Garmin Connect app.
If the watch on it's own isn't 'you' enough, you're able to change the wristband, watch face, add data fields, apps and widgets to the homescreen to have information right in front of you when you need it most. Companies such as Uber, Strava, AccuWeather and many others have already created widgets and apps to pair with your Tactix Charlie, ensuring you're fully immersed in tech for daily use.
