What is the Polar Expedition Parka?
It's a heavy-duty parka jacket designed to offer warmth and protection from extreme wintry conditions. There's a clue in the name - the Polar Expedition Parka is ideal for burly polar expeditions in cold climates, thanks to its warm down filling, durable materials and strategic construction.
What is it made of?
This jacket is primarily made with Fjallraven's own G1000® Eco, reinforced with G1000® HeavyDuty Eco where needed and lined with nylon. Most of these materials are a little more sustainable than conventional fabrics, giving this parka jacket extra eco-friendly credentials without compromising performance and durability. It's also filled with 700-fill power goose down, which we'll touch on a little more below.
Outer: G-1000® Eco is made using a blend of 65% organic cotton and 35% recycled polyester, a much more eco-friendly alternative to regular G1000®. Though it features recycled and organic textiles, this material is incredibly durable and can resist abrasion from rugged terrain easily.
Reinforcements: Patches of G1000® Heavy Duty Eco are placed on the chest, elbows, underside of the forearms, shoulders, pockets and rear of the jacket. The shoulders and rear are also filled with recycled polyester padding for added durability and weather resistance - ensuring you won't lose any heat if exposed to rain or snow, as synthetic padding doesn't lose heat when damp. G1000® Heavy Duty Eco is, in a nutshell, a tougher version of the regular G1000® Eco. It's made with the same blend of organic cotton and recycled polyester, but this time, it's impregnated with Greenland Wax on both sides to create next-level durability. This wax enhances performance, weather resistance and longevity, meaning high-wear or more exposed areas won't be beaten down in harsh weather - ideal for extreme adventuring.
G1000® materials can be adapted to different personal preferences or climatic conditions using Greenland Wax. The wax allows you to customise the fabric's properties, such as wind and water resistance and breathability.
Greenland Wax is easy to apply - you can literally do it anywhere! If you'd like to learn more about how to apply it correctly, check out our short YouTube tutorial by clicking here.
Lining: The inside of the jacket is lined with nylon (polyamide) which feels smooth to the touch yet offers excellent durability to last years of adventures. It's relatively lightweight yet breathable enough to help prevent moisture build-up if you're working hard.
Insulation: This jacket uses 700 fill power, traceable goose-down insulation for maximum warmth with lesser weight. Goose Down is some of the highest quality down on the current market, making this product super high grade and efficient to ensure maximum protection in sub-zero temperatures.
Can't quite catch the lingo? Here's a quick breakdown.
700 Fill power - Fill power measures the warmth and efficiency of the down, alongside its ability to loft/fluff up. A rating of 700 fill power means that 1oz of this down fills 700 cubic inches of space when fully lofted.
Traceable Goose Down - The Fjallraven Down Promise ensures that all down used in Fjallraven products is ethically sourced, meaning no bird has been harmed unnecessarily from live-plucking or force-feeding, and the feathers are 100% traceable - right from being a newly hatched gosling. The down Fjallraven uses is actually a by-product of the food industry, saving a tremendous amount of waste that would otherwise end up in landfill!
What are its features?
A fixed hood gives you overhead protection. It has a faux fur trim that can be removed if you'd rather cut down on weight or bulk and a reflective velcro strap adjuster that allows you to dial in the fit precisely.
An inner baffle collar seals in the warmth from the neck, helping to keep out icy breezes.
The two-way front zipper gives you easy access and ventilation options when needed. If you're wearing a harness, you can undo the jacket from the bottom for extra space without removing the parka altogether.
A protective buttoned storm flap helps seal out drafts and wet weather around the opening. Press buttons used on the webbing are designed for easy repair, increasing longevity and making this jacket one that you can pass down to the family for generations.
This jacket comes with a range of storage options, including two large zippered storage pockets on the chest and two top-loading bellows hand pockets with zipped openings at the sides, ideal for holding compasses, GPS devices or energy gels. The zipped side entry on these pockets works well in blizzards and heavy snow, as it prevents snow from falling inside and building up, keeping your belongings safe and dry.
Two large interior mesh storage pockets are ideal for holding maps or water bottles - keeping them inside your jacket will prevent them from freezing and makes them easily accessible. You also get an interior zipped pocket for more valuable items like keys, a mobile phone or cash. If that's not enough, this parka also has one last zippered Napoleon pocket underneath the front placket.
An updated snow skirt keeps the white stuff at bay, helping to seal you into the jacket without feeling restrictive or uncomfortable. The snow skirt is reinforced with non-slip elastic and can be removed if you'd rather not wear it or want to reduce the weight further.
Last but not least, drawcord adjustments at the waist and hem help retain heat by pulling the jacket closer to the body. These adjusters are also easily repairable.
