What is the Expedition Pack Down Anorak?
Good question! The Expedition Pack Down Anorak is a pull-over style down jacket with a hood and half-length front zip. It's perfect for tackling cold conditions both in the mountains or a little closer to home. So, whether you're heading on a multi-day trek overseas or doing the weekly shop at home, this jacket is sure to keep you feeling snug and warm all winter long.
What is it made of?
The outer and lining of this jacket are constructed with recycled nylon. It's mainly filled using 90% goose down and 10% feather to create maximum loft and warmth for tackling the coldest conditions. However, the shoulders are reinforced with synthetic padding to add durability and weather resistance.
Down Insulation: The down insulation contains a combination of ethically sourced, traceable Goose Down at 700 fill power with 10% feather.
Goose down has larger clusters than duck down, therefore has a better warmth to weight ratio. The down clusters are made up of tiny feather-like strands that trap heat as they loft (fluff) up, which is why down jackets are so effective and popular during the winter.
Can't quite catch the lingo? Here's a quick breakdown.
Fill power - Fill power measures the warmth and efficiency of the down, alongside its ability to loft/fluff up. A rating of 700 fill power means that 1oz of this down fills 700 cubic inches of space when fully lofted. For a more detailed explanation, you can check out our YouTube video on fill power by clicking here.
Ethically sourced - Due to their extensive experience in the outdoor industry, Fjallraven has established a unique production process where 100% of the down used is traceable. The Fjallraven 'Down Promise' is considered in the manufacturing process of every down product, ensuring that down taken from birds has been gathered ethically and is of high quality. Fjallraven's down is collected as a bi-product from the food industry, helping to reduce waste from such a large industry, and never comes from birds that have been treated cruelly (eg. being force-fed or live plucked).
Synthetic padding: The shoulder padding is made of 100% recycled polyester. It's strategically placed to help resist moisture and pressure from wearing a pack when you're out in the mountains, reducing general wear and tear and helping maintain an equal level of warmth and protection in changeable conditions.
Outer/Lining: Fjallraven has constructed the outer and lining using 100% recycled nylon, adding a high level of resistance to withstand wear and abrasion in rugged terrain. Nylon has a good level of thermal stability, optimising warmth by helping retain heat collected by the down insulation without adding excessive weight and bulk or compromising durability.
What are the features?
This jacket has a comfortable, insulated hood that can be adjusted using the yellow drawcord and leather tabs at the front and the elastic drawcord at the back. Optimising the fit of the hood will help to maintain body temperature when the weather is putting up a fight. The bright yellow cords are also easier to navigate if you get caught in a snowstorm when visibility is low, and leather tabs are much more robust and reliable than plastic or fabric.
At the front is a half-length zipper with an inside placket for maximum protection and ventilation when you need it. You'll also find a subtle zipper at the side - opening it will give you more room to make it easier to get on and off.
For storage, two zippered hand pockets are ideal for stashing hill snacks and energy gels, alongside a larger zippered kangaroo pocket, perfect for fitting bulkier items like a map. Inside one of the hand pockets, you'll also find a smaller mesh pocket for valuables such as keys, earbuds or some emergency cash.
All zippers and drawcords are designed for easy repair, so minimum faff is required if you need to fix something up after years of regular use. Providing repair options also makes the jacket much more sustainable. You can wear it repeatedly without throwing it out when it gets a little tired - saving the planet and your bank balance simultaneously, win!
The cuffs have built-in internal lycra cuffs that help keep the weather out without feeling tight or restrictive, and a drawcord adjuster at the hem allows you to cinch in the bottom of the jacket, helping prevent heat loss and wind chill.
To pack it away, this anorak can be stuffed into its own inside pocket, creating a quick, efficient storage solution that is small enough to fit in a kit bag or daypack when you're on the move. Once packed up, it doubles up as a warm, comfortable pillow for those camping out, saving space and weight in your trekking pack for more essential items.
How does it fit?
The fit comes up slightly looser than usual, but is still categorised within Fjallraven's 'Regular' fit bracket. The looser fit gives you extra space to get the anorak on and off easily over the head and layer up underneath in cold conditions.
