What is the Expedition Pack Down Jacket?
The Expedition Pack Down Jacket is a warm, versatile down jacket - the perfect midlayer for freezing conditions or a lightweight outer layer for dry, autumnal days on the hill.
Thanks to its timeless style and durable construction, it's versatile enough to be used casually too! Whether that's for the morning commute to work, weekly supermarket shop or heading out to meet friends for a coffee, it's sure to keep you warm all winter long.
What is it made of?
The outer and lining of this jacket are constructed with recycled nylon. It's mainly filled using 90% goose down and 10% feather to create maximum loft and warmth for tackling challenging temperatures. However, the collar and shoulders are reinforced with synthetic padding, adding durability and weather resistance.
Down Insulation: The down insulation contains a combination of ethically sourced, traceable Goose Down at 700 fill power with 10% feather.
Goose down has larger clusters than duck down, therefore has a better warmth to weight ratio. The down clusters are made up of tiny feather-like strands that trap heat as they loft (fluff) up, which is why down jackets are so effective and popular during the winter.
Can't quite catch the lingo? Here's a quick breakdown.
Fill power - Fill power measures the warmth and efficiency of the down, alongside its ability to loft/fluff up. A rating of 700 fill power means that 1oz of this down fills 700 cubic inches of space when fully lofted. Ethically sourced - Due to their extensive experience in the outdoor industry, Fjallraven has established a unique production process where 100% of the down used is traceable. The Fjallraven 'Down Promise' is considered in the manufacturing process of every down product, ensuring that down taken from birds has been gathered ethically and is of high quality. Fjallraven's down is collected as a bi-product from the food industry, helping to reduce waste from such a large industry, and never comes from birds that have been treated cruelly (eg. being force-fed or live plucked).
Synthetic padding: The collar and shoulder padding is made of 100% recycled polyester. It's strategically placed to help resist moisture and pressure from wearing a pack when you're out in the mountains, reducing general wear and tear and helping maintain an equal level of warmth and protection in changeable conditions.
Outer/Lining: Fjallraven has constructed the outer and lining using 100% recycled nylon, adding a high level of resistance to withstand wear and abrasion in rugged terrain without compromising weight and packability.
What are its features?
The jacket has stitch-through baffles that keep the down insulation in place for an even spread of warmth. It has a flattering, fitted shape that is more figure hugging than regular down jackets, without feeling too tight or restrictive.
A two-way zipper at the front gives you options for ventilation if you're working hard in the mountains and also makes a climbing harness underneath more accessible. The zip has an inside placket that adds extra protection at the entry and helps prevent the zip from snagging fabric when it's pulled.
For storage, two hand pockets provide room for hill snacks, energy gels, a mobile phone or GPS, and an internal zippered pocket offers extra security for more valuable possessions like your car keys or a purse.
The cuffs have an elastic binding that offers better freedom of movement around the wrists. It provides flexibility for technical manoeuvres or handling kit and room for the cuffs to comfortably fit around chunky mittens or gloves.
To adjust the hem, simply pull the drawcord adjuster to cinch it at the hips. By tightening it up, you'll be able to keep in the heat and prevent nasty gusts from blowing up the jacket to avoid a hit of wind chill.
Both the front zipper and drawcords are designed for easy repair, so minimum faff is required if you need to fix something up after years of frequent use. Providing repair options also makes the jacket much more sustainable. You can wear it repeatedly without throwing it out when it gets a little tired - saving the planet and your bank balance simultaneously, win!
Finally, to pack the jacket away, it can be stuffed into its own inside pocket, creating a quick, efficient storage solution that is small enough to fit in a kit bag or daypack when you're on the move.
