What is the Spitz Down Hoodie?
Designed to meet the demands of mountaineering, climbing, and hiking in unpredictable conditions, the Spitz Down Hoodie is a robust, stretchy, and reliably warm down jacket that's capable of all manner of mountain pursuits. It utilises Haglof's H DOWN Platinum 800FP goose down and a high-tech baffle construction for high-performance warmth and protection. This impressive down can stay dry for a whopping 10,000 minutes (that's a week!) when exposed to wet conditions.
What is it made from?
The Spitz Down combines Haglof's premium H DOWN Platinum goose down with a durable, water-resistant, stretchy face fabric to create a robust, functional, and warm down jacket well-suited for unpredictable British mountain weather conditions.
Insulation: Haglofs has filled the jacket with 133g of their finest H DOWN Platinum, which is high-quality 800-fill power, RDS-certified, fully traceable, premium Goose Down with a 90% down, 10% feather ratio for maximum loft (fluffiness) and insulation. This Goose Down has larger clusters than Duck Down, which improves the warmth-to-weight ratio. These clusters are made up of tiny feather strands that trap heat, which is why it's so important to get a quality jacket with a construction that allows its insulation to loft effectively.
Each down cluster is treated with a Nikwax® fluorocarbon-free hydrophobic finish, which adds water resistance to the down itself, enabling the down clusters to stay dry and perform for up to 10,000 minutes (that's a full week!) in damp conditions, making it a fantastic option for various thrill-seeking adventures in unpredictable climates. However, no matter how impressively hydrophobic the down is, we'd always recommend packing a waterproof shell for heavy downpours.
Can't quite catch the lingo? Here's a quick break down.
Fill power - Fill power measures the warmth and efficiency of the down, alongside its ability to loft/fluff up. A rating of 800 fill power means that 1oz of this down fills 800 cubic inches of space when fully lofted. For a full explanation, you can check out our YouTube video on fill power by clicking here.
R.D.S - The Responsible Down Standard ensures that the down is sourced from happy birds who haven't been plucked and have been well cared for.
Hydrophobic - Hydrophobic down dries out and lofts quicker, resisting moisture from sweat that may build up as you're warming up inside the jacket. Fluorocarbon free hydrophobic finishes don't use harmful chemicals that cause damage to the environment - a bonus for more eco-conscious adventurers.
Outer: The Spitz Down Hoodie's outer is constructed from a two-way stretch woven Bluesign® approved fabric that comprises recycled polyamide and elastane. The material features a pre-woven seamless baffle construction, which gives the appearance of baffles without the traditional stitch lines. This clever construction reduces cold spots in the jacket caused by down migration over time. It also reduces the amount of wind that can penetrate through, or warm air that can escape the jacket via traditional stitch lines. The minimal stitch lines also increase the baffle's functionality, durability, and longevity by reducing the possibility of malfunctions or damage over time.
Lining: Haglofs has lined the jacket with a 30-denier polyester woven fabric, of which 75% is recycled. This smooth lining provides next-to-skin comfort while making sliding the jacket on over chunky layers effortless. The lining is also Bluesign® approved for added reassurance that the material has been created responsibly.
The jacket's outer and lining have been finished with a PFC-free DWR (durable water repellant) coating to encourage light rain and snow to bead off the fabric instead of soaking in. However, please note that this does not make the jacket waterproof.
For those of you who are wondering, PFCs are also known as harmful 'forever chemicals' because they stay permanently in the environment, bioaccumulate in animals and cause lasting damage to our ecosystems. It comes as no surprise that many outdoor brands are now working towards a completely PFC-Free future.
What are its features?
Starting from the top, an insulated, helmet-compatible hood offers warmth and protection from the elements. The hood is fully adjustable and features an internal scuba hood to create the perfect fit over your head or helmet and maximise your visibility in adverse weather.
As previously mentioned, the jacket features a clever pre-woven seamless baffle construction to prevent cold spots, optimise the fabric's wind resistance properties, and enhance the overall durability and longevity of the jacket.
For storage, there are two zippered hand pockets and an internal zippered pocket, ideal for stowing cold-weather essentials such as a beanie, gloves, trail snacks, energy gels, a mobile phone, and a GPS device.
A two-way front zippered closure provides versatile ventilation options, freedom of movement for the hips on steep inclines and ease of use with a climbing harness. An internal insulated placket helps prevent heat loss through the zip.
Haglofs have used chunky zip pulls throughout the jacket for ease of use while wearing gloves and mittens. This reduces the time spent faffing so you can focus on the task at hand.
A dropped hem to the rear provides added coverage across the back whilst bending or crouching down. Finally, hidden elasticated cuffs and a down-filled adjustable hem further seal the elements out and trap warm air inside the jacket.
