What is the Argon Hoody?
The Argon Hoody is a 750 fill power down jacket, exclusive to Trekitt! It has a lightweight, packable yet warm construction, versatile enough for both mountain and general use. Whether you're off scrambling in the Lake District, hill walking in the Peak District or simply heading off to work during the winter, the Argon Hoody will keep you warm and cosy all day long.
What is it made of?
Rab has constructed the Argon Hoody using a 20D Recycled Pertex® Quantum outer and lining with a fluorocarbon-free DWR (durable water repellent). It's filled with 750 fill power down insulation treated with a Nikwax fluorocarbon-free Hydrophobic Finish.
Insulation: The jacket uses 750 fill power, R.D.S Certified European Goose Down for maximum loft (fluffiness) and insulation.
European Goose Down is fantastic quality down - it has larger clusters than Duck Down which improves the warmth to weight ratio. These clusters are made up of tiny feather strands that trap heat, which is why it's so important to get a quality jacket with a construction that allows its insulation to loft effectively!
The down is treated with a Nikwax fluorocarbon free Hydrophobic finish, which adds light water resistance to the insulation.
Can't quite catch the lingo? Here's a quick break down.
Fill power - Fill power measures the warmth and efficiency of the down, alongside its ability to loft/fluff up. A rating of 750 fill power means that 1oz of this down fills 750 cubic inches of space when fully lofted. For a more detailed explanation, you can check out our YouTube video on fill power by clicking here.
R.D.S - The Responsible Down Standard ensures that the down is sourced from happy birds who haven't been plucked and have been well cared for.
Hydrophobic - Hydrophobic down dries out and lofts quicker, resisting moisture from sweat that may build up as you're warming up inside the jacket. Fluorocarbon free Hydrophobic finishes don't use harmful chemicals that cause damage to the environment - a bonus for more eco-conscious adventurers!
Outer/Lining: Rab has used windproof Pertex® Quantum for both the outer and lining of this jacket.
Pertex® Quantum uses a tightly woven structure constructed from incredibly fine yarns. It's lightweight, soft and incredibly packable, designed to trap still air and improve the efficiency of the insulation. Pertex® Quantum allows insulation inside the jacket to fully loft, optimising the overall performance and comfort of the garment.
The fabric is finished with a sustainable fluorocarbon-free DWR, which encourages light rain or snow to bead off the jacket. However, this, unfortunately, doesn't provide complete waterproof protection, so when the heavens open, you might want to layer a shell jacket over the top.
What are its features?
The Argon Hoody is made up of a light midi-baffle stitch-through construction that optimises warmth by stabilising the insulation. Using stitch through construction keeps the down in place, inside its own individual baffle, preventing down migration to control an even spread of heat.
The hood is down filled and has an elasticated volume adjustment, allowing you to adapt the fit however you find most comfortable whilst helping prevent heat loss by drawing it in tighter around the head.
At the front, the main entry point uses a YKK® Vislon® zip down the centre. The zip runs smoothly and has a pull tab, making it easy to grab with cold fingers or chunky gloves. At the top of the zip is a built-in fleece chin guard - when you have the jacket fastened to the top, it feels super comfy and smooth on the skin and protects your face from rubbing against the zip.
For storage, there's a concealed zipped chest pocket which is perfect for stowing away valuables such as a mobile phone, wallet or keys. There are also two zipped hand pockets, perfect for keeping your mitts toasty or storing extra essentials like some tasty hill snacks, a GPS device or doggy bags.
Finally, the cuffs are elasticated, giving you more freedom of movement around the wrists, handy if you're tackling a technical scramble, or simply need to fit them around a thick pair of mittens. They feel really comfortable and flexible, and help to keep out that icy breeze by drawing in any gaps inbetween.
