What is the Infinity Alpine Jacket?
The Infinity Alpine Jacket is an incredibly versatile layer specifically designed for mountainous adventures and long, chilly days out. It is a natural goose down insulated and highly weather resistant jacket for mountaineers and hill walkers looking for excellent warmth with high levels of breathability and protection from all but the worst of the weather.
Rab have used the zoned Gore-Tex Infinium membrane to protect the down from the elements, and whilst this does not make the Infinity 100% waterproof, it does make it incredibly breathable and to be honest, you’d have to try pretty damn hard to get wet in this jacket.
What is it made of?
Insulation: Let's start with the beating heart of the Infinity Jacket, the insulation. Rab have used 175g of 800 Fill Power, Hydrophobic, RDS European Goose Down in a stitch-through construction to maximum the down’s ability to loft.
Ok, let’s break that down:
Fill power - Fill power measures the warmth and efficiency of the down, alongside its ability to loft/fluff up. A rating of 800 fill power means that 1oz of this down fills 800 cubic inches of space when fully lofted. For a full explanation, you can check out our YouTube video on fill power by clickinghere.
R.D.S - The Responsible Down Standard ensures that the down is sourced from happy birds who haven't been plucked and have been well cared for.
Hydrophobic - Hydrophobic down dries out and lofts quicker, resisting moisture from sweat that may build up as you're warming up inside the jacket. Fluorocarbon free Hydrophobic finishes don't use harmful chemicals that cause damage to the environment - a bonus for more eco-conscious adventurers.
Stitch-through construction – This jacket uses a combination of stitch through construction which helps cut down on weight and increases packability, with technically advanced 'switch-back' seam construction on the body to reduce water ingress
Surrounding all this luxurious insulation is the zoned Gore-Tex Infinium Windstopper membrane. This new membrane provides complete wind-proofing, high levels of breathability and excellent weather resistance. Technically this membrane isn't 100% waterproof, but in practice we've found that only prolonged torrential rain will eventually seep through. The Infinity Alpine uses two different weights of this membrane (30D and 13D) in the jacket to perfectly balance weight, weather protection and breathability – so you get a jacket that will help protect you from the elements but will also breath well when you’re working hard.
On the inside a 20D recycled lightweight, breathable nylon is used which increases next-to-the-skin comfort and on the outside Rab have used a lightweight, ripstop nylon for increased durability and protection. Additional stitch-free overlaid panels on the torso and upper arms, provide extra protection in harsh conditions.
What are the features?
Starting at the top, the Infinity Alpine features a helmet compatible, down insulated hood with a wired peak and concealed adjusters to seal in the warmth around your face. This feature makes the Infinity Jacket a great choice for full on winter mountaineering.
Moving down, you've got articulated sleeves for increased comfort when climbing, finished off at the cuffs with Velcro adjusters to get a tight seal over gloves or mittens. The front zip is a two-way Vislon for increased weather protection and reliable performance even in freezing conditions. This zip is then backed up with an insulated storm flap to make sure nothing gets through.
Storage wise, you get two zipped hand pockets and a zipped internal chest pocket, perfect for your phone, compass, and keys. Down at the bottom of the jacket is a hem drawcord to seal out the weather and keep in the warmth and for extra safety there are reflective logos.
How does it fit?
The Infinity Alpine Jacket fits into Rab's Relaxed fit block. This is to allow layers to fit underneath in super cold conditions, but also to allow complete freedom of movement when mountaineering.
Where does it fit in the layering system?
The Infinity is designed to be your outer layer in extremely cold and damp conditions. Thanks to the Gore Infinium membrane, Hydrophobic Down and protective outer fabric, you're unlikely to ever need to wear a shell jacket over the top.
