What is the Nikka Parka?
This jacket is a warm, waterproof parka named after one of the coldest places in Sweden - Nikkaluokta, located north of the Arctic Circle. Its synthetic insulation and protective, long-length design certainly lives up to its name and is ideal for trail-to-town adventures, walking, exploring or even heading into the city.
What is it made of?
Main fabric: The jacket comprises a lightweight two-layer Gore-Tex® material. This updated Gore® material uses an ePE membrane, a key milestone in the leading brand's responsible performance journey. If you were wondering, ePE stands for expanded polyethylene, which is light, thin yet durable, and PFC-free. If you're familiar with Trekitt descriptions, you may have seen that 'PFC-free' phrase floating around before. PFCs are per or poly-fluorinated chemicals, aka 'forever chemicals' that stay permanently in the environment and cause lasting damage to our ecosystems. Many companies are working towards a completely PFC-free future, so this is quite a breakthrough for the Gore-Tex® brand! In addition, this membrane has a reduced carbon footprint, as it uses laminates with a lower-mass membrane and select textiles, making it an ideal choice for more environmentally conscious adventurers.
The material itself provides complete waterproof and windproof protection, with ample breathability to prevent sweat and condensation from building up inside, helping regulate body temperature. Overall, it has been rigorously tested to ensure a long-lasting product life, which adds to those eco-credentials, as you won't need to buy a new replacement for a long time, saving energy, resources and waste that a second jacket would use.
The face fabric is treated with a PFCec-free DWR (durable water repellent) to enhance weather protection without causing detrimental harm to the environment by avoiding using those pesky per/poly-fluorinated chemicals that we mentioned earlier.
Insulation: The Nikka Parka is padded with Thermore® Ecodown insulation, a PETA-approved, vegan insulation made with 100% recycled PET bottles. Being a synthetic insulation, it performs well when damp (unlike down), so even in rain or snow, it will still keep you warm! This insulation also has a high warmth-to-weight ratio, which is fantastic for multi-day trips and cold mountain missions.
What are its features?
A fully adjustable hood provides optimum protection for bad weather. It has a front adjustment that allows you to seal out rain and wind, helping to keep you warm and protected all day long.
Double storm flaps add weather resistance to fastenings and zips without hindering access.
The jacket is fastened with a two-way zipper that allows you to dump heat without removing it entirely and makes room around the bottom for stepping high or gearing up. At the top, behind the zip you'll find a chin guard which protects your skin from getting caught or chafing when the jacket's fully fastened for longer periods.
In terms of storage, there are two patch hand pockets layered over two hip pockets with brushed tricot lining. These are ideal for storing essentials like trail snacks, a GPS, maps or a mobile phone, yet double up nicely as hand warmers thanks to the soft, fleece-like lining. There's also one internal zipped pocket for smaller valuables like a wallet, cash or keys.
The cuffs on each sleeve are adjustable, meaning you can adapt the fit around chunky mitts, gloves or smartwatches while helping to keep the weather out.
