What is the Positron Pro Jacket?
The Positron Pro is a down-filled jacket with excellent weather protection and warmth for exposed routes and challenging environments. Designed for alpine and mountain expeditions up to 6000m, it uses a zoned baffle construction to optimise warmth and mobility whilst minimising overall bulk and pack size.
Despite its mountain intentions, the Positron Pro is an incredibly versatile layer, suitable for hill-walkers, climbers and mountaineers looking for a super warm jacket with high levels of breathability, protection from all but the worst of the weather and some great eco-credentials to top it off.
What is it made from?
The materials are what makes this jacket so special. The Positron Pro Jacket uses a 20D recycled Pertex® Quantum Pro outer shell, recycled Pertex® Quantum lining and 800 fill power insulation.
Insulation: The jacket uses 275g of 800 fill power, R.D.S Certified European Goose Down, offering maximum loft (fluffiness) and insulation.
European Goose Down is fantastic quality down - it has larger clusters than Duck Down which improves the warmth-to-weight ratio. These clusters are made up of tiny feather strands that trap heat, which is why it's so important to get a quality jacket with a construction that allows its insulation to loft effectively!
The down is treated with a Nikwax fluorocarbon-free Hydrophobic finish, which adds light water resistance to the down itself.
Can't quite catch the lingo? Here's a quick breakdown.
Fill power - Fill power measures the warmth and efficiency of the down, alongside its ability to loft/fluff up. A rating of 800 fill power means that 1oz of this down fills 800 cubic inches of space when fully lofted.
R.D.S - The Responsible Down Standard ensures that the down is sourced from happy birds who haven't been plucked and have been well cared for.
Hydrophobic - Hydrophobic Down dries out and lofts quicker, resisting moisture from sweat that may build up as you warm up inside the jacket. Fluorocarbon-free Hydrophobic finishes don't use harmful chemicals that cause damage to the environment - an excellent feature for more eco-conscious adventurers.
Fabrics: The Positron Pro Jacket is constructed using 20D Pertex® Quantum Pro to the jacket's outer and 20D Pertex® Quantum lining. These Pertex® fabrics are created from recycled materials and use tightly woven fibres for excellent wind resistance and durability whilst still being lightweight and soft. They are designed to perfectly balance wind resistance and breathability, providing the ultimate performance for intense, fast-paced mountain missions.
The Pertex® Quantum Pro outer has a microporous coating to provide excellent water resistance, making it more suitable for use in cold or damp environments where keeping warm and dry is crucial.
The Pertex® Quantum lining traps still air, helping to warm the insulation and maintain its efficiency whilst creating a light, protective barrier from the elements.
Both the face fabric and the lining of the Positron Pro are treated with a DWR (durable water repellent) that encourages rain and snow to bead off the material instead of soaking in; however, please note this makes the jacket highly water resistant, but not fully waterproof. For prolonged wet weather, we always recommend packing a waterproof hardshell jacket for when the weather turns nasty.
What are its features?
The Positron Pro uses a boxwall baffle structure on the torso, hood and upper arms, giving the down insulation more space to fluff up than classic stitch-through baffles, as they have a little more height to them and less bulk around the seams. The more the insulation lofts, the more heat it can trap inside to keep you reliably warm.
The underarms and side panels use a stitch-through construction to help increase mobility where you need it most, whilst reducing overall weight, bulk and pack size.
A helmet-compatible down-filled hood allows you to pull the hood over your helmet when the weather gets rough. Two concealed adjusters on the hood are easy to use when wearing gloves; they allow you to cinch in the hood for a secure fit on exposed routes. A stiffened peak on the top of the hood provides a little extra coverage, protecting the face from falling snow and rain; especially useful when negotiating technical climbs in bad weather, when you need to focus on the task at hand.
A chunky YKK® VISLON® two-way front zip down the front of the jacket is designed for easy use when wearing bulky gloves or mitts. The zip has a synthetic insulated baffle to the inside, helping reduce heat loss through the zip.
For storage, a generously sized chest pocket provides space for a mobile phone and energy gels. The pocket has a synthetic insulation overlay to help protect you and the pocket's contents from the cold. Two zipped lower hand pockets offer space for storing a GPS device, extra gloves and trail snacks.
At the hem of the jacket, you'll find an adjustable drawcord with an anti-snag tether which is super easy and quick to use.
How does it fit?
The Positron Pro Jacket features Rab's regular fit, which offers a little room underneath for different layers, allowing you to create your very own effective layering system tailored to the weather conditions.
