What is the Garwhal Jacket?

Constructed from Gore-Tex Paclite®, the Garwhal Jacket provides super lightweight protection from wind and rain with minimal bulk. The Garwhal is perfect for fastpackers, hikers and trail runners who want to carry the least load on their adventures.

What is it made of?

Mountain Equipment has constructed the Garwhal using a 2.5 layer Gore-Tex Paclite® fabric to create a versatile, wear-all-day protective shell with 100% Polyester and an ePTFE membrane.

Gore-Tex Paclite® - Paclite® is the perfect adaptable outer layer, so light you will barely notice you're wearing it. Offering breathable windproof and waterproof technology with the Gore-Tex Guaranteed To Keep You Dry™ promise, this packable fabric is ideal for both outdoor and everyday use.

What are its features?

The specially designed Mountain HC Hood offers a versatile, helmet compatible fit that still feels comfortable to wear without. The hood is fully adjustable to customise its shaping and contour, maximising comfort whilst offering extra protection to the head, face and neck.

Articulated, pre-shaped sleeves allow better freedom of movement around the arms and shoulders by providing extra fabric nearer to the joints. The measurements are tailored to women's frames for a more accurate shape. The jacket's cuffs are adjustable for added security and flexibility around the wrists, with a laminated finish for reinforcement when wearing a Fitbit, watch or GPS.

The main centre fastening is a YKK® moulded Aquaguard® zip with an internal flap. This fastening style provides easy access and Aquaguard® water repellent protection to help prevent water from seeping through the seams and fastening at the front.

In terms of storage, there are two large hand pockets fastened with water repellent YKK® zippers, ideal for securely storing energy gels, a phone or GPS.

Dual tether hem drawcords allow the wearer to cinch around the hips to create a tighter silhouette. Securing the hem helps prevent gaping on the hips, where heat would escape via the bottom of the jacket.

How does it fit?

The jacket comes in a women's Alpine fit, fitting snug whilst leaving extra room for multiple layering options underneath.

Where does it fit in the layering system?

The Garwhal Jacket should be worn as an outer layer for lightweight protection. It is suitable for all seasons and can be kept on comfortably all day with its protective yet breathable membrane.

Features:

  • 2.5-layer GORE-TEX PACLITE® fabric
  • Mountain HC Hood is fully adjustable
  • Alpine fit with articulated and pre-shaped sleeves
  • YKK® moulded Aquaguard® centre front zip with internal flap
  • 2 large pockets with YKK® WR (water repellent) zips
  • Adjustable laminated cuffs and dual tether hem drawcords
  • Women's specific measurements

For best performance:

With any new waterproof, we advise you to wash the product with the appropriate tech wash and reapply a fresh DWR to activate the technology and achieve the best performance from day one.

How does waterproof technology work?

Modern waterproof technology often uses a waterproof membrane sandwiched between layers of fabric and a DWR (Durable Water Repellent) on the outer material.

What is 'wetting out', and how does it affect my waterproof?

DWRs commonly get worn down from contact, whether with your backpack or your fingertips. When the DWR wears down, your waterproof product may begin to 'wet out', meaning the water stops beading off the surface and starts to soak in instead.

While the waterproof membrane will prevent the jacket from leaking or water from getting inside, when your jacket wets out, moisture (from sweat or condensation) can build up on the interior, causing it to feel moist.

There's a common misconception that, when this happens, the product is faulty because people believe the waterproof membrane is leaking. However, this is most likely not the case; you simply need to clean your jacket and reapply the DWR.

The easiest way to spot when this is happening is to see if water beads off the material's surface or soaks in.

PFC/PFAS usage in modern waterproof and DWR technology

Most modern DWR technology avoids the use of PFCs/PFAS chemicals.

PFC-free means perfluorinated chemical-free. Companies such as Gore-Tex® are also beginning to eliminate these harmful chemicals in their waterproof membranes with technology like Gore-Tex® ePE.

What are PFC/PFAS chemicals?

Perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs) are also known as forever chemicals and cause environmental harm, similar to PFAS.

PFAS means per- or poly-fluorinated alkyl; these are a group of industrial chemicals that also cause detrimental harm to the environment, often through product and garment manufacture.

These chemicals can't break down, so once they reach nature (usually via factory water waste), they stay in the ecosystem and contaminate living organisms, working their way up the food chain. PFAS and PFCs are suspected carcinogens and have been known to affect mammal reproduction and hormone production. Therefore, many leading brands in the outdoor industry are now prioritising cutting out the use of these chemicals entirely to contribute to a more responsible manufacturing process.

How to care for a new waterproof product

PFC/PFAS-free waterproof products still perform effectively. However, they will require more frequent care (washing and reapplying a DWR) to ensure consistency. We stock various care products for this, which you can browse here. If this is your first time doing this, check out our easy how-to guide by clicking here.
