What is the Nanda Devi Jacket?

It's a bluesign® approved, waterproof jacket designed with reliable Gore-Tex® technology. The Nanda Devi is ideal for hiking and trekking, thanks to its versatile and comfortable construction. It's functional, without being overly techy, to suit more casual outdoor enthusiasts that enjoy adventuring all year round.

What is it made from?

The jacket comprises a two-layer, 75D recycled polyamide face fabric with an updated, more environmentally friendly Gore-Tex® ePE membrane and an FC-free DWR (durable water repellent).

This updated Gore® technology uses an ePE membrane, a key milestone in the leading brand's responsible performance journey. If you were wondering, ePE stands for expanded polyethene, which is light, thin yet durable, and PFC-free. If you're familiar with Trekitt descriptions, you may have seen that 'PFC-free' phrase floating around before. PFCs are per or poly-fluorinated chemicals, aka 'forever chemicals' that stay permanently in the environment and cause lasting damage to our ecosystems. Many companies are working towards a completely PFC-free future, so this is quite a breakthrough for the Gore-Tex® brand! In addition, this membrane has a reduced carbon footprint, as it uses laminates with a lower-mass membrane and select textiles, making it an ideal choice for more environmentally conscious adventurers.

The material itself provides complete waterproof and windproof protection, with ample breathability to prevent sweat and condensation from building up inside, helping regulate body temperature. Overall, it has been rigorously tested to ensure a long-lasting product life, which adds to those eco-friendly credentials, as you won't need to buy a new replacement for a long time, saving energy, resources and waste.

What are its features?

The Nanda Devi has a fully adjustable mountain hood that fits comortably over a fleece hood or beanie. It's made with an alpine fit that comes up fairly slim, keeping the weight down, but leaving just enough room for a warm layer underneath. Articulated, pre-shaped sleeves help to optimise freedom of movement when using hiking poles, climbing or scrambling up steep inclines.

When working hard, you'll be grateful for the two-way pit zips that allow you to quickly dump heat underneath the arms, without having to take the jacket off. Adjustable, laminated cuffs are incredibly durable and allow you to adapt the fit around gloves or smartwatches. Dual tether hem drawcords at the bottom help to maximise protection in poor conditions.

The main entry is secured with a moulded centre front zip, protected by a storm flap to help prevent rain or snow from seeping through the fastening.

There are two large pockets with YKK® zip fastenings and storm flaps to seal out the wet weather, perfect for trail snacks, a mobile phone or GPS device. Another zipped pocket inside makes ideal, secure storage for small valuables such as keys or a wallet.

  • GORE-TEX® with ePE membrane and FC-free DWR

For best performance:

With any new waterproof, we advise you to wash the product with the appropriate tech wash and reapply a fresh DWR to activate the technology and achieve the best performance from day one.

How does waterproof technology work?

Modern waterproof technology often uses a waterproof membrane sandwiched between layers of fabric and a DWR (Durable Water Repellent) on the outer material.

What is 'wetting out', and how does it affect my waterproof?

DWRs commonly get worn down from contact, whether with your backpack or your fingertips. When the DWR wears down, your waterproof product may begin to 'wet out', meaning the water stops beading off the surface and starts to soak in instead.

While the waterproof membrane will prevent the jacket from leaking or water from getting inside, when your jacket wets out, moisture (from sweat or condensation) can build up on the interior, causing it to feel moist.

There's a common misconception that, when this happens, the product is faulty because people believe the waterproof membrane is leaking. However, this is most likely not the case; you simply need to clean your jacket and reapply the DWR.

The easiest way to spot when this is happening is to see if water beads off the material's surface or soaks in.

PFC/PFAS usage in modern waterproof and DWR technology

Most modern DWR technology avoids the use of PFCs/PFAS chemicals.

PFC-free means perfluorinated chemical-free. Companies such as Gore-Tex® are also beginning to eliminate these harmful chemicals in their waterproof membranes with technology like Gore-Tex® ePE.

What are PFC/PFAS chemicals?

Perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs) are also known as forever chemicals and cause environmental harm, similar to PFAS.

PFAS means per- or poly-fluorinated alkyl; these are a group of industrial chemicals that also cause detrimental harm to the environment, often through product and garment manufacture.

These chemicals can't break down, so once they reach nature (usually via factory water waste), they stay in the ecosystem and contaminate living organisms, working their way up the food chain. PFAS and PFCs are suspected carcinogens and have been known to affect mammal reproduction and hormone production. Therefore, many leading brands in the outdoor industry are now prioritising cutting out the use of these chemicals entirely to contribute to a more responsible manufacturing process.

How to care for a new waterproof product

PFC/PFAS-free waterproof products still perform effectively. However, they will require more frequent care (washing and reapplying a DWR) to ensure consistency. We stock various care products for this, which you can browse here. If this is your first time doing this, check out our easy how-to guide by clicking here.
