What is the Orbital Jacket?

This jacket offers complete waterproof protection whilst still breathable, stretchy and comfortable. It sits between a softshell and a hardshell jacket and can be worn for numerous activities in varied conditions. The Orbital takes away the hot and clammy feel of some bulkier waterproof jackets yet can be packed down super small when not in use - what's not to love?

What is it made of?

The key to the stretchy yet protective nature of this jacket is the three-layer Drilite® Stretch fabric. This three-layer construction places a comfortable knitted polyester fabric next to your skin, a flexible waterproof membrane in the middle and a stretchy 20D polyester on the outer to deal with most of the abuse. The Orbital's fabric has a HH of 20,000mm and an MVTR of 35,000gm/24h. The industry standard for determining whether a fabric is waterproof is a HH of 1500, and a MVTR of 20,000 is rated as "exemplary".

The material is coated with a PFC-free DWR (durable water repellent), which encourages rain and snow to bead off the surface without using harmful perfluorinated chemicals, aka 'forever chemicals'.

The combination of these layers provides a jacket that has the comfort and mobility of a softshell jacket with the fully waterproof protection of a traditional hardshell.

What are its features?

M.E have recently updated the design of the Orbital, which now has a Mountain HC (helmet compatible) hood, meaning you can comfortably fit it over a helmet when climbing and mountaineering and need some extra protection from the elements.

It's also been updated with an 'Active Fit' that sits closer to the body to minimise excess fabric and reduce the risk of any gaping pieces from snagging on jagged rock or rugged terrain.

The YKK® moulded AquaGuard® zip protects from water ingress to keep you completely dry underneath. For reinforcement, there's also a storm flap that sits behind the zip, so if you have it partly fastened, you will still be protected from rain, wind or snow.

Two hand pockets with water-resistant zips make ideal storage for essentials you want to keep handy, such as snacks and energy gels. Additionally, you have a secure internal pocket to keep more valuable items safe, such as keys or a mobile phone.

Pit zips underneath each arm also use water resistant zip fastenings - they're easy to use without removing the jacket and allow you to dump heat quickly during intense activities.

Cuffs are laminated and adjustable, allowing you to optimise the fit around other layers and gloves. The hem has dual tether drawcords to cinch in the bottom to enhance weather protection and heat retention to balance your body's microclimate in changeable conditions.

Features:

  • Three-layer DRILITE® STRETCH 20D fabric with PFC-free DWR
  • Mountain HC Hood is fully adjustable
  • Women's active fit with articulated and pre-shaped sleeves
  • YKK® moulded AquaGuard® centre front zip with internal flap
  • Two pockets with YKK® water resistant zips
  • YKK® underarm venting zips
  • Adjustable laminated cuffs and dual tether hem drawcords
  • Internal pocket
Technical Information

Materials: 100% polyester, PU membrane

For best performance:

With any new waterproof, we advise you to wash the product with the appropriate tech wash and reapply a fresh DWR to activate the technology and achieve the best performance from day one.

How does waterproof technology work?

Modern waterproof technology often uses a waterproof membrane sandwiched between layers of fabric and a DWR (Durable Water Repellent) on the outer material.

What is 'wetting out', and how does it affect my waterproof?

DWRs commonly get worn down from contact, whether with your backpack or your fingertips. When the DWR wears down, your waterproof product may begin to 'wet out', meaning the water stops beading off the surface and starts to soak in instead.

While the waterproof membrane will prevent the jacket from leaking or water from getting inside, when your jacket wets out, moisture (from sweat or condensation) can build up on the interior, causing it to feel moist.

There's a common misconception that, when this happens, the product is faulty because people believe the waterproof membrane is leaking. However, this is most likely not the case; you simply need to clean your jacket and reapply the DWR.

The easiest way to spot when this is happening is to see if water beads off the material's surface or soaks in.

PFC/PFAS usage in modern waterproof and DWR technology

Most modern DWR technology avoids the use of PFCs/PFAS chemicals.

PFC-free means perfluorinated chemical-free. Companies such as Gore-Tex® are also beginning to eliminate these harmful chemicals in their waterproof membranes with technology like Gore-Tex® ePE.

What are PFC/PFAS chemicals?

Perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs) are also known as forever chemicals and cause environmental harm, similar to PFAS.

PFAS means per- or poly-fluorinated alkyl; these are a group of industrial chemicals that also cause detrimental harm to the environment, often through product and garment manufacture.

These chemicals can't break down, so once they reach nature (usually via factory water waste), they stay in the ecosystem and contaminate living organisms, working their way up the food chain. PFAS and PFCs are suspected carcinogens and have been known to affect mammal reproduction and hormone production. Therefore, many leading brands in the outdoor industry are now prioritising cutting out the use of these chemicals entirely to contribute to a more responsible manufacturing process.

How to care for a new waterproof product

PFC/PFAS-free waterproof products still perform effectively. However, they will require more frequent care (washing and reapplying a DWR) to ensure consistency. We stock various care products for this, which you can browse here. If this is your first time doing this, check out our easy how-to guide by clicking here.
