What is the Latok Alpine GTX?
The Latok Alpine GTX is a lightweight shell jacket that provides reliable waterproof protection without being overly techy. However, this doesn't mean it lacks functionality or features!
It's perfect for many types of outdoor activity, from alpinists who enjoy fast paced adventures to mountain hikers and outdoor ice climbers.
What is it made of?
The Latok Alpine GTX is constructed using 40D recycled Gore-Tex® Pro 3L Most Breathable, with a Gore® DWR for extra protection. Despite being recycled, this material performs no less than any other Gore-Tex® fabric. It's fantastic in the rain yet more sustainable than regular Gore, making it beneficial for both the wearer and the planet!
To break it down, it's a three layer (3L) fabric with added durability, breathability and extra DWR (Durable Water Repellent), designed to withstand abrasion on rough surfaces like rock. It offers a great level of waterproof and windproof protection whilst still being extremely breathable. Thanks to its versatility, it can even be worn for general mountain use! It feels comfortable in changeable environments whilst minimising the accumulation of sweat, keeping you cool during high output activity.
The material feels really smooth to touch. It's soft yet still robust. However, if you're not a fan of crinkly jackets, this one does make a little noise as you wear and move around in it - this can be common with Gore-Tex® shell jackets.
The eagle-eyed amongst us may spot the seam taping inside the jacket. Gore-Tex® Pro seam taping helps ensure that no water can seep inside through the stitching. It's finished really neatly and doesn't add much weight or bulk to the garment.
What are its features?
At the top of the jacket is a helmet compatible hood that offers plenty of room for climbing helmets, so if the heavens open in the middle of an ascent, you have the option to embrace some extra shelter. The hood is a TriPoint hood, meaning it has wind collar, crown and face adjustment points, allowing you to really optimise the fit for maximum protection from the elements. The adjustment system uses concealed internal cord locks and haptic, mitt friendly pullers, so you can adapt everything without taking your gloves off. The hood also has a wired, stiffened peak at the top, which helps to direct rain away from your face.
The sleeves are articulated, meaning they are designed with more room under the arm. This helps stop the sleeve from riding up when the arm is fully extended. Articulated sleeves provide improved freedom of movement and arm lift - perfect for tackling technical climbs or steep scrambles. The cuffs are extended to provide more shelter for the hands. They have a simple hook and loop adjustment system to adapt the fit around gloves and mitts.
You'll find two-way fully venting pit zips underneath the arms, which are secured with YKK® AquaGuard zips and haptic pullers, making them easy to get hold of - you won't need to take the jacket off just to undo them. AquaGuard zips are taped zips that offer enhanced water resistance around the entry.
There are two pockets strategically placed on the chest for easy access. They have wide openings and are also fastened with YKK® AquaGuard zips. The pockets are super roomy, fit for carrying all types of goodies, such as a map, GPS or those all-important hill snacks.
Two more pockets can be found inside the jacket, one zipped pocket and one mesh. These are ideal for storing valuables you might want to keep a little closer to you, such as keys, a mobile phone or some emergency cash.
The main entry to the jacket uses a centre front zip with a lower snap fastener for extra security, or ventilation when you're getting a little too warm. A fleece lined chin guard sits at the top of the zip, which feels super smooth and soft against the skin.
Dual-sided rear hem adjusters allow you to cinch in the jacket further to keep the wind out. The adjusters are mitt-friendly, so you won't need to faff around taking your gloves off to use them if you're out exploring colder climates.
How does it fit?
The Latok Extreme comes in a regular fit. Regular fit offers a little extra room, maximising freedom of movement and allowing you to wear your own effective layering system underneath, without feeling restricted.
