What is the Vastra Jacket?

It's a versatile winter waterproof designed to accommodate various environments and activities in colder months, whether trekking, scrambling, climbing or mountaineering. The Vastra is also made with more eco-friendly materials, making it a more sustainable choice for the conscious adventurer.

What is it made of?

This jacket is primarily made with a revised version of the classic three-layer Gore-Tex®. This updated Gore® material uses an ePE membrane, a key milestone in the leading brand's responsible performance journey. If you were wondering, ePE stands for expanded polyethylene, which is lightweight, durable, and PFC-free. If you're familiar with Trekitt descriptions, you may have seen that 'PFC-free' phrase floating around before. PFCs are per or poly-fluorinated chemicals, aka 'forever chemicals' that stay permanently in the environment and cause lasting damage to our ecosystems. Many companies are working towards a completely PFC-free future, so this is quite a breakthrough for the Gore-Tex® brand! In addition, this membrane has a reduced carbon footprint, as it uses laminates with a lower-mass membrane and select textiles, making it an ideal choice for more environmentally conscious adventurers.

The material itself provides complete waterproof and windproof protection, with ample breathability to prevent sweat and condensation from building up inside, helping regulate body temperature. Overall, it has been rigorously tested to ensure a long-lasting product life, which adds to those eco-friendly credentials, as you won't need to buy a new replacement for a long time, saving energy, resources and waste.

The jacket also uses a bluesign® approved recycled polyester solution-dyed backer. bluesign® certifications ensure that the materials used avoid harmful substances, use reduced air and water emissions, increase resource productivity, and the production line is more transparent and trustworthy.

What are its features?

The Ostra has a fully adjustable, helmet-compatible hood that allows full protection from the elements when wearing a climbing helmet.

Two large hand pockets make room for energy gels, snacks or a GPS, whilst an internal mesh pocket provides secure storage for personal belongings and valuables like mobile phones, wallets or keys. On the left sleeve, you've also got a concealed ski pass pocket for easy access, making it quicker to grab your pass while keeping it safe in its own designated spot.

Zips at each side of the jacket are for ventilation - they allow you to dump heat quickly when working hard and enhance airflow if you want to catch the cool breeze. The front zip is a two-way zip for access and enhanced freedom of movement, allowing you to unzip from the bottom to accommodate climbing harnesses and extra equipment.

An adjustable hem and cuffs help keep loose powder and icy breezes out, promoting temperature regulation for various winter sports and activities, like climbing and ski touring.

Features:

  • Fully adjustable helmet hood
  • Two large hand pockets
  • Internal stowaway pocket made of mesh
  • Concealed ski pass pocket at the left sleeve
  • Vent zips at sides
  • Two-way front zipper
  • Adjustable sleeve ends
  • Adjustable bottom

For best performance:

With any new waterproof, we advise you to wash the product with the appropriate tech wash and reapply a fresh DWR to activate the technology and achieve the best performance from day one.

How does waterproof technology work?

Modern waterproof technology often uses a waterproof membrane sandwiched between layers of fabric and a DWR (Durable Water Repellent) on the outer material.

What is 'wetting out', and how does it affect my waterproof?

DWRs commonly get worn down from contact, whether with your backpack or your fingertips. When the DWR wears down, your waterproof product may begin to 'wet out', meaning the water stops beading off the surface and starts to soak in instead.

While the waterproof membrane will prevent the jacket from leaking or water from getting inside, when your jacket wets out, moisture (from sweat or condensation) can build up on the interior, causing it to feel moist.

There's a common misconception that, when this happens, the product is faulty because people believe the waterproof membrane is leaking. However, this is most likely not the case; you simply need to clean your jacket and reapply the DWR.

The easiest way to spot when this is happening is to see if water beads off the material's surface or soaks in.

PFC/PFAS usage in modern waterproof and DWR technology

Most modern DWR technology avoids the use of PFCs/PFAS chemicals.

PFC-free means perfluorinated chemical-free. Companies such as Gore-Tex® are also beginning to eliminate these harmful chemicals in their waterproof membranes with technology like Gore-Tex® ePE.

What are PFC/PFAS chemicals?

Perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs) are also known as forever chemicals and cause environmental harm, similar to PFAS.

PFAS means per- or poly-fluorinated alkyl; these are a group of industrial chemicals that also cause detrimental harm to the environment, often through product and garment manufacture.

These chemicals can't break down, so once they reach nature (usually via factory water waste), they stay in the ecosystem and contaminate living organisms, working their way up the food chain. PFAS and PFCs are suspected carcinogens and have been known to affect mammal reproduction and hormone production. Therefore, many leading brands in the outdoor industry are now prioritising cutting out the use of these chemicals entirely to contribute to a more responsible manufacturing process.

How to care for a new waterproof product

PFC/PFAS-free waterproof products still perform effectively. However, they will require more frequent care (washing and reapplying a DWR) to ensure consistency. We stock various care products for this, which you can browse here. If this is your first time doing this, check out our easy how-to guide by clicking here.
