What is the Nevado Jacket?

The Nevado is a lightweight Gore-Tex® jacket designed to withstand tough conditions and endure long mountain adventures, developed with the help of Tierra's test team of professional mountain guides to ensure maximum functionality and performance. It's the ideal piece for alpine exploring, skiing and multi-activity adventures where every gram of weight makes a difference.

What is it made of?

The main fabric used to build the Nevado is 100% polyamide with Gore-Tex® 3L (three-layer) laminate and Gore-Tex® C-Knit Backer Technology.

It is extremely durable yet lightweight to suit alpine activities where you'll be counting every gram of weight.

Gore-Tex® technology provides maximum waterproof protection without hindering the overall breathability of the jacket, so when working up a sweat, it'll help regulate your temperature and stop moisture from building up inside.

The C-Knit Backer technology gives the interior a smooth, soft texture that feels fantastic against the skin. It adds extra durability for reinforcement and will help to keep you comfortable for long, difficult days in the mountains.

What are its features?

The jacket has a helmet compatible hood that is fully adjustable, allowing you to tailor it to the size and shape of your head or helmet, should you be wearing one.

The Nevado is fastened with a two-way zipper that works fantastically when wearing a climbing harness. It allows you to unzip from the bottom for easier access and offers better accommodation when roped up. Alternatively, you can use it to ventilate for instant relief.

In terms of storage, two large hand pockets provide easy access to small essentials such as a GPS device, hand warmers or energy gels. There's also a large alpine chest pocket for bulkier belongings.

An internal pocket provides additional security for mobile phones, while an internal ski pass pocket does exactly what it says on the tin, so to speak, both of which you can access from the outside for added convenience! You'll also find internal skin pockets that double up nicely as a stow-away pouch for your beanie hat.

Large pit zips provide maximum ventilation for when you need to quickly dump heat, without removing the jacket entirely.

The zips are so big that you could even poke your arms out when unfastened. Velcro both empty sleeves together using the small tabs on the cuffs, throw the loop around the back of your neck and you're left with a functional Gore-Tex® gilet that keeps your core warm, but offers more exposure for cooling - this is ideal for those who can never seem to find the right temperature. What's more, you wouldn't even have to stop to remove your backpack or take off your harness; it's a handy trick for ski touring and glacier travel when functionality, breathability and time management is key.

Finally, you can adjust cuffs and the hem of the jacket easily to optimise the fit around your layering system and increase heat retention for colder climates.

Technical Information

Weight: 435g

Materials: Main Fabric: 70 denier Gore-Tex 3L with Gore C-Knit Backer Technology - 100% Polyamide, Membrane 100% ePTFE, GORE DWR, Bluesign Fabric, Oeko-Tex Certified Fabric.

For best performance:

With any new waterproof, we advise you to wash the product with the appropriate tech wash and reapply a fresh DWR to activate the technology and achieve the best performance from day one.

How does waterproof technology work?

Modern waterproof technology often uses a waterproof membrane sandwiched between layers of fabric and a DWR (Durable Water Repellent) on the outer material.

What is 'wetting out', and how does it affect my waterproof?

DWRs commonly get worn down from contact, whether with your backpack or your fingertips. When the DWR wears down, your waterproof product may begin to 'wet out', meaning the water stops beading off the surface and starts to soak in instead.

While the waterproof membrane will prevent the jacket from leaking or water from getting inside, when your jacket wets out, moisture (from sweat or condensation) can build up on the interior, causing it to feel moist.

There's a common misconception that, when this happens, the product is faulty because people believe the waterproof membrane is leaking. However, this is most likely not the case; you simply need to clean your jacket and reapply the DWR.

The easiest way to spot when this is happening is to see if water beads off the material's surface or soaks in.

PFC/PFAS usage in modern waterproof and DWR technology

Most modern DWR technology avoids the use of PFCs/PFAS chemicals.

PFC-free means perfluorinated chemical-free. Companies such as Gore-Tex® are also beginning to eliminate these harmful chemicals in their waterproof membranes with technology like Gore-Tex® ePE.

What are PFC/PFAS chemicals?

Perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs) are also known as forever chemicals and cause environmental harm, similar to PFAS.

PFAS means per- or poly-fluorinated alkyl; these are a group of industrial chemicals that also cause detrimental harm to the environment, often through product and garment manufacture.

These chemicals can't break down, so once they reach nature (usually via factory water waste), they stay in the ecosystem and contaminate living organisms, working their way up the food chain. PFAS and PFCs are suspected carcinogens and have been known to affect mammal reproduction and hormone production. Therefore, many leading brands in the outdoor industry are now prioritising cutting out the use of these chemicals entirely to contribute to a more responsible manufacturing process.

How to care for a new waterproof product

PFC/PFAS-free waterproof products still perform effectively. However, they will require more frequent care (washing and reapplying a DWR) to ensure consistency. We stock various care products for this, which you can browse here. If this is your first time doing this, check out our easy how-to guide by clicking here.
