What is the Mutant 22?
It's a functional backpack for climbing based activities, whether rock climbing at your local crag or going fast and light across some refreshing alpine routes. The Mutant has been developed with the help of local mountain guides and athletes and tested in all seasons and disciplines of climbing, so rest assured it's the perfect pack for the job.
What is it made of?
The main fabric used to construct the Mutant is 210D recycled high tenacity nylon, which is incredibly durable and can take a beating from rocks and rugged terrain easily. It has recycled nylon grid nanofly accents, and the base is reinforced with tough 450D recycled polyester to resist bumps and scrapes from heavy use without adding too much weight and bulk.
All materials are bluesign® approved and treated with a PFAS-free DWR (durable water repellent), which encourages light rain and snow to bead off the fabric.
PFAS-free means without per- or poly-fluorinated alkyl substances, which are chemicals often referred to as 'forever chemicals' that last for a long time in the environment and cause harm to human and animal life.
Which backsystem does it use?
As far as Osprey backsystems go, the Mutant is a little less on the techy side.
It has an Atilon framesheet with HDPE single stay and snowshed fabric, which provides structure and support when the pack is loaded. The backpanel is padded with ridged EVA foam for comfort and stops contents inside from jabbing you in the back as you move.
The carrying harness uses more EVA foam, so it feels solid and secure yet still comfy when fastened up, surrounded with stretch woven mesh that helps to increase ventilation.
What are its features?
The harness is made up of a removable web belt that gives you the option to strip down the weight if you're counting the grams, and padded shoulder straps that are wide enough to help even out the load when the pack is mounted. The belt has padded hip wings to increase comfort and ice gear carry loops for optional external carry.
A large bucket opening gives you access to the main compartment of the pack, which has plenty of room for climbing shoes, chalk, extra clothing etc. Underneath the opening, there's a zip mesh pocket for keeping other belongings and valuables secure, like keys, a mobile phone or a wallet.
Dual upper compression straps help to remove dead space once you've packed all your bits inside to prevent them from wobbling around or becoming unorganised. The Voile strap compatible side loops offer additional compression, should you need it. Alternatively, they are great as extra attachment points or could even be used to rig an A-frame ski carry if you're hitting the slopes!
The buckle fastenings are lightweight and easy to use with gloves or numb fingers, perfect for the winter season or activities at a higher altitude.
Removable webbing gear attachment straps and front panel daisy chain loops are also another option for external storage. The loops are also compatible with Voile straps. Dual tool locks with bungee tie-offs provide security for ice axes so they can be properly and safely carried.
If you're a fan of hydration reservoirs, you're in luck! All Mutant packs are hydration compatible with an internal sleeve for reservoirs and water bladders.
