What is the Outcast 44?
Rab's Outcast 44 is a specialised climbing pack with multiple carry options to help you carry equipment between routes with ease. The book style opening offers a quick, tidy storage solution for ropes and gear that can be easily accessed.
What is it made of?
The Outcast 44 is made from 840D Ballistic Nylon and 420D PW (plain weave).
Ballistic nylon is robust, heavy duty nylon durable enough to take on bumps and scrapes from rocky terrain. This nylon type is much stronger and stiffer than other fabrics, delivering extensive toughness whilst still offering a lightweight feeling.
PW (Plain weave) is a simple fabric with a basic construction that can withstand abrasion and provide a more structured look.
The bag has a Hydroshield® finish which creates a moisture resistant coating to help water bead off the material.
Which backsystem does it use?
This pack uses a specialised Tri-flex™ backsystem, designed to support and contour to the body for optimum load transfer when transporting heavier kit. The Tri-flex™ backsystem uses three key load support elements to build the overall structure.
A spring steel or aluminium frame improves the strength of the backsystem so it can take on heavier weight with ease. There is a HDPE stiffening sheet to retain the pack's shape and a moulded EVA foam backpanel. Foam backpanels help increase comfort and adapt to the body shape for a personal, figure hugging feel.
What are its features?
This climbing pack has a zipped book style opening, which opens almost like a suitcase - super handy for easy access to all the gear you've tucked away in your bag.
There are upper compression straps with retainers on the sides of the bag and internal compression straps within. Adjust the straps to compress the pack when it's not fully loaded to prevent the kit from wobbling around when you're on the move.
Top and side handles offer multiple carry options to suit personal preference, making moving around with the bag much easier when it isn't mounted on your back.
A rope tarp is included with this pack to keep your ropes and kit clean when laid out on the ground, an extra practical feature that also offers better value for money!
There are a lot of compartments to choose from in terms of storage. An external zipped pocket can securely fit maps and guide books inside for exploring new locations. A clip-stick pocket is ideal for avid climbers who need somewhere secure to keep clip-sticks whilst hiking up to a route. Stretchy mesh side pockets are super handy for carrying larger water bottles without using up precious space within your pack.
There is also an internal security pocket which is perfect for stowing away more valuable items like a phone or wallet.
Four internal gear loops and an internal mesh divider help keep your bits and bobs organised when the bag is full.
The harness features a forward pull padded hipbelt to transfer weight into the hips instead of putting your back out, and the sternum strap helps keep the bag in place.
For safety, the sternum strap also has a handy built-in whistle; use it to attract attention or signal help if you're lost or stuck in a dangerous situation. The pack also comes with an SOS panel - an instruction sheet for worst case scenarios printed on a fabric panel inside the pack itself.
