What is the Kestrel 48?
The Osprey Kestrel 48 is a real workhorse piece of equipment that can cope with long days out, multi-day trips and lightweight world travel. The 48-litre size allows enough room for all your essentials without feeling like you've overloaded your equipment.
What is it made of?
The majority of the pack is crafted from durable, lightweight 210D nylon with a water-resistant coating. A heavier 420D Nylon strengthens vital areas across the design, plus a super-tough 500D Nylon Packcloth is used across the base where the pack feels more impact.
What backsystem does it use?
The Kestrel's AirScape™ backpanel prioritises comfort and stability by maximizing ventilation and breathability.
AIRSCAPE™ BACKPANEL - The specialised AirScape™ backpanel features vented and ridged foam sections overlaid with a breathable, lightweight mesh for maximum comfort and breathability.
What are its features?
The Kestrel 48 features traditional lid access that allows some downward compression if the pack is partially loaded. A side access zip makes it super easy to get into your bag quickly, and there's also a zipped lower sleeping bag compartment with a removable divider.
Storage options won't be a problem with the Kestrel 48, with it featuring a zipped side pocket, hip belt pockets, a front stretch stash pocket, top lid zipped pocket and an internal mesh security pocket that features a handy key-clip. The side stretch-mesh pockets are worth an extra mention, as they feature dual entry points and can even fit hefty one-litre bottles inside. There's a forward-facing entrance at the base and a regular opening at the top, meaning you can reach to load and unload your belongings whilst wearing the pack.
The Kestrel 48 is fully hydration compatible with a clever external sleeve making replenishing your water bladder quick and easy. If you use trekking poles, you'll love the Stow-On-The-Go™ storage system, which allows you to quickly and easily store poles when they are not required.
Side compression straps pull the weight closer to your back, increasing comfort and carrying efficiency; they also stop gear from rolling about in a partially packed bag. Top straps have a reverse straight jacket function, offering additional attachment points if you need to carry extra gear on the outside of your pack. The compression straps at the base of the pack are great for stabilising and locking the load as they attach directly to the hip belt. Removable sleeping pad straps sit at the bottom of the Kestrel 48 that, as the name suggests, help secure bulky sleep mats if necessary. An adjustable sternum strap helps equalise the load and features a built-in emergency whistle. Manage your winter equipment with twin ice axe loops, an integrated and removable rain cover and multiple lashing points across the front that work well to secure crampons.
