What is the Exosphere 3.5 Sleeping Mat?
It's a self-inflating sleeping mat that is lightweight and durable enough to be used regularly by keen campers, whether staying on a campsite, in the van or taking a bivy bag out for a spot of wild camping.
What is it made of?
The outer of the mat uses 20D recycled polyester, which is light yet durable enough to endure years of use with a lesser impact on the planet. The material is coated with a TPU coating, and a fluorocarbon-free DWR (durable water repellent) that helps any light rain or coffee spills simply bead away instead of soaking in. Fluorocarbon-free DWR's are much healthier for the environment than conventional treatments, as they do not use harsh per-fluorinated chemicals.
The Exosphere uses X-Core™ Foam Technology within, a polyurethane open-cell foam with a honeycomb-like structure designed to save weight whilst boosting warmth. It's efficient in trapping and stabilising warm air to increase heat retention and protect you from the cold ground. The foam feels supportive and comfortable and helps to simplify the mat's set-up process.
What are its features?
The self-inflating system means you don't have to breathe yourself dizzy from blowing this one up. Simply unroll it and leave it to inflate itself over time!
The hybrid rectangular shape of this mat allows you to sleep comfortably in various positions, perfect for wriggly sleepers! It feels lovely and secure and doesn't slide around as much as other affordable sleeping mats on the market.
It runs around 5cm thick, with the insulation, once inflated and has a low profile two-way valve that makes it super easy to set up.
A repair kit is included for emergencies, alongside a roll-away stuffsack for storing the mat when travelling.
Ideally, this sleeping mat should not be stored in the stuffsack (if possible) when at home. Keeping it inflated will help prevent the foam from being compressed over more extended periods, as this would, in time, reduce the longevity and performance of the insulation.
Overall, the mat boasts an R-value of 3.6, making it ideal for camping between spring and autumn.
