What is the Cirrus Ultra Hoody?
It's a synthetically insulated jacket that uses body-mapped insulation and elite fabrics to provide down-like warmth, softness and performance without the faff. Light and packable, with a heat-reflective TILT lining, it's the perfect insulating layer that'll expertly deal with damp, cold weather and changeable conditions.
What is it made from?
Insulation: Rab has used two different types of PrimaLoft® synthetic insulation throughout the jacket for optimal thermal performance, without affecting weight and pack size.
The main body and tops of the arms are filled with 247g of PrimaLoft® ThermoPlume®+ blown synthetic insulation. PrimaLoft® ThermoPlume®+ is a synthetic down alternative that's designed to mimic the lightweight warmth, loft, softness and compressibility of down without the faff. With the look, feel, and extremely similar performance to Down, it's a great alternative for unpredictable environments when there's a chance of rain. PrimaLoft® ThermoPlume®+ combines the well-known but still impressive PrimaLoft® ThermoPlume down-like structure with Synthetic fibra balls to form a unified structure that creates a scaffolding effect to protect the more fragile fibres. The result is a resilient loft that is resistant to clumping, allowing the insulation to trap warm air more efficiently whilst also improving the insulation's durability without affecting pack size.
Rab has used PrimaLoft® Gold synthetic sheet insulation on the side panels, underarm sleeve and shoulders for better compression and moisture management. PrimaLoft® Gold is a synthetic insulation that provides ample warmth, breathability and efficiency with lower bulk and weight. The exceptionally small fibres of this insulation provide excellent thermal efficiency with minimum bulk.
Fabrics: The jacket’s outer is constructed using 20D Pertex® Quantum Pro, whilst a 10D Pertex® Quantum lining with a Thermo Ionic Lining Technology (TILT) scrim on the torso is used inside the jacket.
Pertex® Quantum fabrics are created from recycled materials and use tightly woven fibres for excellent wind resistance and durability whilst still being lightweight and soft. They are designed to perfectly balance wind resistance and breathability, providing the ultimate performance for intense, fast-paced mountain missions.
The Pertex® Quantum Pro outer has a microporous coating to provide excellent water resistance, making it more suitable for use in cold or damp environments where keeping warm and dry is crucial. The Pertex® Quantum lining traps still air, helping to warm the insulation and maintain its efficiency whilst creating a light, protective barrier from the elements.
Thermo ionic lining technology or TILT for short. This clever technology utilises titanium-coated nylon fibres to create an almost 'foil blanket' effect whereby your natural body heat is reflected back to you, increasing warmth by 32% without adding a gram of weight. And no, it doesn't feel like a foil blanket, it feels exactly the same as a standard jacket lining! Neat, Right?
Both the face fabric and the lining of the Cirrus Ultra are treated with a PFC-Free DWR (durable water repellent) that encourages rain and snow to bead off the material instead of soaking in; however, please note this makes the jacket highly water resistant, but not fully waterproof. For prolonged wet weather, we always recommend packing a waterproof hardshell jacket for when the weather turns nasty.
What are its features?
Starting from the top, a helmet-compatible hood with a stiffened peak protects you from the elements and provides added coverage on exposed routes. The hood is fully insulated and can be cinched right in around the face to keep you warm and toasty without impacting your line of sight by using the rear and internal adjustments.
The jacket is fastened with a two-way lightweight YKK® VISLON® front zip with an insulated zip baffle to help prevent heat loss and a fleece-lined chin guard to avoid any discomfort around the face when fully zipped.
For storage, you'll find two concealed zipped hand pockets and two insulated chest pockets for keeping a mobile phone, gloves, trail snacks, and a GPS device close to hand yet still protected from the cold. One of the chest pockets doubles as an internal storage pocket, allowing the jacket to be easily packed away so it takes up less space in your pack when not in use.
Elasticated cuffs help provide the optimal fit over chunky gloves and bare hands. A dual-sided hem adjustment with an anti-snag tether helps trap warm air inside the jacket, keeping you warm and comfortable even when popping it on over bulky layers.
