What is the Glaceon Pro Jacket?
It's an incredibly warm, packable down jacket that combines recycled down and recycled fabrics for an excellent warmth-for-weight ratio. It's ideal for exploring the hills and mountains in cold climates, whether hiking, mountaineering, or tackling high alpine routes.
What is it made from?
Insulation: The jacket uses 700 fill power Recycled Down, meaning there's a mix of different types of down within the jacket, creating a unique, much more responsible type of insulation.
If you're a little unsure about what down actually is, it is made up of clusters of tiny feather strands that trap heat. As the down lofts (fluffs up) it can trap more warmth than if it were to be compacted into a small space. This is why it's so important to get a quality jacket with a construction that allows its insulation to loft effectively! Most down insulation comes from ducks and geese, and Rab's recycled down uses a mixture of both.
The down is treated with a Nikwax fluorocarbon-free hydrophobic finish, which adds light water resistance to the down itself. This helps the down maintain its thermal performance in damp environments, as it's no secret down and moisture don't like each other!
Can't quite catch the lingo? Here's a quick break down.
Fill power - Fill power measures the warmth and efficiency of the down, alongside its ability to loft/fluff up. A rating of 700 fill power means that 1oz of this down fills 700 cubic inches of space when fully lofted. For a more detailed explanation, you can check out our YouTube video on fill power by clicking here.
Hydrophobic - Hydrophobic down dries out and lofts quicker, resisting moisture from sweat that may build up as you warm up inside the jacket. Fluorocarbon free Hydrophobic finishes don't use harmful chemicals that cause damage to the environment - a bonus for more eco-conscious adventurers.
Fabrics: Rab has used 20D Pertex® Quantum Pro for the jacket's outer and 20D Pertex® Quantum for the lining for maximum loft and protection from the elements.
Pertex® Quantum fabrics are created from recycled materials and use tightly woven fibres for excellent wind resistance and durability whilst still being lightweight and soft. They are designed to perfectly balance wind resistance and breathability, providing the ultimate performance for intense, fast-paced mountain missions.
The Pertex® Quantum Pro outer has a microporous coating to provide excellent water resistance, making it more suitable for use in cold or damp environments where keeping warm and dry is crucial. The Pertex® Quantum lining is effective at trapping still air, helping to warm the insulation and maintain its efficiency whilst creating a light, protective barrier from the elements.
Both the face fabric and the lining are treated with a fluorocarbon-free DWR (durable water repellent) that encourages rain and snow to bead off the material instead of soaking in; however, please note this makes the jacket highly water resistant, but not fully waterproof. For prolonged wet weather, we always recommend packing a waterproof hardshell jacket for when the conditions turn nasty.
What are its features?
Starting from the top, a helmet-compatible hood with a stiffened peak protects you from the elements and provides added coverage on exposed routes. The hood is fully insulated and can be cinched right in around the face to keep you warm and toasty by using the rear and internal adjustments.
The jacket is fastened with a two-way lightweight YKK® VISLON® front zip with an insulated storm flap to prevent strong winds from entering the jacket and heat loss through the zip. Whilst a soft Tricot-lined chin guard protects the face from any discomfort when fully zipped.
For storage, you'll find two zipped hand pockets for storing cold weather essentials such as a beanie, gloves and trail snack. A concealed zipped chest pocket is ideal for keeping a mobile phone or GPS device within easy reach without overly impacting the jacket's aesthetic.
Finally, elasticated gussets at the cuffs with easy-use hook and loop closures provide the optimal fit over chunky gloves or bare hands. They help keep warm air inside the jacket and cold winds out.
