What is the Vulcan Jacket?
The Vulcan is a warm, stretchy, highly breathable softshell jacket designed as an alternative to an insulated jacket in cold winter conditions. Ideal as an active piece for mountain use.
What is it made of?
The Vulcan uses Gore-Tex Infinium throughout. Using Gore-Tex Infinium firstly adds a durable and highly weather-resistant layer of protection, making the Vulcan completely windproof and incredibly water-resistant (although not classed as waterproof, in our experience it will take a lot of rain to eventually creep through). Unlike many softshells as well, Gore-Tex Infinium is a membrane, meaning it won't lose its weather resistance in the same way a standard softshell without a membrane would. It will still need the DWR (durable water repellent) coating re-proofed from time to time, however, the membrane will always provide protection against the elements.
Intended for winter conditions, Mountain Equipment have added a brushed, warm inner fabric to provide breathable warmth without the use of insulation.
An over-locked and top stitched construction on the body increases the Vulcan's durability, and twin needle stitching on the hood reinforces it to allow a helmet to fit underneath with no risk of ripping.
What are its features?
If you do get too hot, underarm pit zips can be opened up to increase the breathability and will allow wind to pass through. Two hand pockets and a large Napoleon chest pocket feature on the front of the Vulcan with a breathable mesh lining, while an inner security pocket provides weather protection and peace of mind for your phone, keys or other expensive items.
Other useful features include a helmet-compatible hood with plenty of adjustment to fit your head when not wearing a helmet, dual-tether hem drawcords that seal in the hem of the jacket and some velcro cuffs to prevent snow and other debris making their way up the sleeves.
