What is the Keb-Eco Shell Jacket?
Great question! It's a functional three-layer jacket that provides waterproof and windproof protection with stretch, for demanding, technical adventures in adverse conditions. Whether hiking in the Lake District, scrambling in the Highlands or even climbing somewhere overseas, it'll keep you dry and comfortable to help you reach the summit.
What is it made of?
Fjallraven has used its very own sustainable Eco-Shell to construct this jacket. It's a tough yet breathable material that offers slight stretch and maximum waterproof protection at a lesser cost to the environment. It has a lovely soft feel and is quieter than the usual, rustly waterproof material, adding a little more luxury to this jacket than your average, standard shell.
Eco-Shell is made of recycled polyester. It is lightweight and durable yet requires less raw resources to produce. This polyester has a Hydrophilic membrane, meaning it has a microscopic structure with hydrophilic features. In plain English, the hydrophilic membrane is what makes the jacket both breathable and waterproof.
Tiny vapour particles from sweat and moisture can fit and travel outwards through the membrane's pores. However, water droplets from rain are too large to fit through these tiny pores, so although sweat can escape, water from showers, storms and external sources cannot pass through, keeping you feeling fresher and dry throughout your adventure.
The polyester is impregnated with a PFC-free durable water repellent (DWR), adding to the material's water resistance.
Perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs) used initially in DWRs can’t break down, so once they reach nature through water waste pumped out from factories, they stay out there and contaminate living organisms, working their way up the food chain. PFC's are suspected carcinogens and have been known to affect reproduction and hormone production in mammals. Therefore, Fjallraven, like many leading brands in the outdoor industry, has now made it a priority to cut out the use of these chemicals to contribute to a greener manufacturing process.
What are its features?
The Keb Eco-Shell has a snug-fitting, three-way adjustable hood that offers plenty of room for a climbing helmet. The adjuster is easy to use and effective at gathering the load around the head for maximum warmth and protection.
At the front, the jacket is fastened with a two-way Aquaguard® zipper and has a protective storm flap just behind. Aquaguard® zippers have waterproof taping on the inside to enhance waterproof protection around the entry without adding extra weight or bulk and giving a tidy finish.
Zippered ventilation points at each side of the jacket give you the option to dump some heat when working hard in the mountains, whether you're tackling a steep, trickly scramble or climbing a more technical route on the rockface.
Two spacious chest pockets give you plenty of storage options without getting in the way of a climbing harness or backpack. They're easy to reach in and are fastened with zippers for extra security. Each pocket has elastic mesh inner pockets to keep more valuable belongings such as keys or a mobile phone safe on-the-go.
Cuffs can be adjusted and adapted to fit around bare lists, multiple layers or chunky mitts. At the bottom of the jacket, the hem can be adjusted to maximise weather protection and retain heat in exposed conditions.
To summarise, this jacket is perfect for technical mountain missions. It has all the features you need in a stipped back, functional design with slightly stretchy fabric, improving freedom of movement for more advanced manoeuvres.
