Mountaineering

What is the Changabang?

The Changabang is Mountain Equipment's flagship, uncompromising, versatile and fully featured hard-shell jacket, designed for hardest ascents and the gnarliest descents. It thrives in every mountain environment from alpine climbing, skiing/snowboarding and year-round winter mountaineering.

What is it made of?

Providing total waterproof and windproof protection inside the Changabang is the latest Gore-Tex Pro membrane. Mountain Equipment uses the "Most Breathable" version of this membrane to ensure you stay dry from the inside and out when tackling technical routes.

Layered on top of this membrane is a super-tough 80D nylon with a durable water repellent coating; this acts as the 'suit of armour' and protects both you and the membrane.

Inside is a solution-dyed Nylon 6 microgrid woven backer that significantly improves the environmental footprint compared to the previous fabric backer found in Gore-Tex Pro garments.

M.E have used their Storm Construction techniques to ensure you get fortress-like protection from the elements. Everything from seam construction, placements and taping, to face fabrics selection, bar tack reinforcement and YKK Aquaguard zips have been carefully selected and designed to keep out the worst weather imaginable.

What are its features?

Starting at the top, a Mountain HC hood easily fits a climbing helmet underneath and features side adjustment with Cohaesive Cordlocks to cinch the hood down to your head if you're just wearing a beanie. There’s also a volume adjuster at the back to reduce the bagginess if you’re not wearing a helmet. The hood will also roll down if not required and can be secured with a Velcro tab to stop it from flapping about in the wind. When folded away it forms a protective collar, which is nice. Cohaesive Cordlocks are like little buttons which sit within the fabric to adjust the hood; this is not only neater and stops long pieces of elastic slapping you in the face but is also far easier to use with big bulky gloves or mitts.

A two-way Aquaguard main zip allows you to fit the jacket over a climbing harness or ventilate if you cook up a sweat and is designed to run freely in freezing conditions. Underarm zips or “pit-zips” open up to quickly and effectively dump excess heat without exposing your torso to the elements.

The bulk of the storage is taken care of by four large, over and under laser-cut and laminated chest pockets which are positioned above the harness/hipbelt line. The right hand “under” pocket has a neat clip inside to secure loose items. There’s also a “ski-pass” pocket on the left forearm, perfectly positioned for the ski lift. These pockets all feature the same Aquaguard zips which are designed to keep running freely in sub-zero conditions. Tucked away on the left-hand side is a laser-cut and laminated inner security pocket to further reduce stitching, bulk and weight. The perfect place to stash your phone/GPS to maximise battery life in cold conditions.

For winter mountain sports the Changabang features a snow skirt to stop snow or spindrift from blowing up inside the jacket, but if you don’t need the snow skirt it can be easily unzipped and removed. The snow skirt itself is packed with features, it has its own dual tether drawcord, front zip and a poppered tab to take the strain off the bottom of the zip.

A dual-tether hem drawcord gives you an extra adjustment and eliminates the chances of it snagging on axes or poles like a traditional looped drawcord. Combined with the snow skirt, this hem drawcord really helps to seal out the elements and keep you comfortable. The laminated cuffs now include a Velcro closure that doesn’t freeze up, meaning they'll remain secure even in the coldest conditions.

How does it fit?

To ensure a comfortable fit for all-season activities the Changabang is built around Mountain Equipment’s “Mountain Fit” block so it has enough room for heavier/bulkier winter layers without being too big and baggy when worn over a baselayer in summer.

The sleeves are pre-shaped and articulated to allow for a more natural and unrestricted movement and feature a longer section over the back of the hand for added protection.

Care and maintenance

To keep your outdoor clothing and equipment in tip top condition and performing to its maximum we recommend the use of Nikwax products. We have been using Nikwax products since day one (26th March 1986) and have found them to be totally reliable, dependable and effective. Today’s Nikwax treatments contain environmentally friendly elastic water-repellent polymers that bond to fabric fibres, leaving the spaces between open and breathable. These stretchy polymers are able to stretch and move with the fabric so they stay put for longer and work better.

Nikwax treatments will not change the look or feel of the fabric and they are all water based, environmentally safe, non-flammable and contain no nasty Fluorocarbons. Nikwax products can be used to clean, re-proof and revitalise all your outdoor technical clothing and equipment.

Waterproof breathable clothing has a durable water-repellent (DWR) finish applied to the face fabric during the manufacturing process. The DWR forces water to bead up and roll off the surface therefore preventing the fabric from absorbing moisture. If the outside of your jacket is soaked in a layer of cold water, the warm damp air within can’t escape and will condense on the inside. This makes the jacket feel cold clammy and can make you think that it’s leaking. The DWR finish is not permanent and needs to be maintained and revitalised to optimise performance.

This three layer waterproof jacket should be cleaned regularly with Nikwax Tech Wash; I wash my jacket about once a month, or more often if it gets really filthy. Regular washing with Tech Wash will maintain the DWR for longer and remove salts and oils that can contaminate the fabric, and it will keep your lovely jacket clean and smelling fresh. Washing can be done in a machine according to the manufacturers care guidelines (on the internal label). First clean out any detergent and conditioner residue from the machine dispenser and then add the required amount of Tech Wash and away you go. Hand washing is also suitable but be sure to rinse the garment well.

When you notice that rain/water is no longer beading up and rolling off it’s time to re-proof. Nikwax TX Direct will re-instate a long lasting DWR to completely rejuvenate your jacket. Re-proofing can also be done in the machine once a garment has been washed. Just add the TX-Direct and use the same programme you used for washing. You can also use the spray-on product on a damp garment that has just been washed.

You wouldn’t buy a Ferrari and never have it serviced, so make sure you regularly wash and re-proof your quality kit.

For best performance:

With any new waterproof, we advise you to wash the product with the appropriate tech wash and reapply a fresh DWR to activate the technology and achieve the best performance from day one.

How does waterproof technology work?

Modern waterproof technology often uses a waterproof membrane sandwiched between layers of fabric and a DWR (Durable Water Repellent) on the outer material.

What is 'wetting out', and how does it affect my waterproof?

DWRs commonly get worn down from contact, whether with your backpack or your fingertips. When the DWR wears down, your waterproof product may begin to 'wet out', meaning the water stops beading off the surface and starts to soak in instead.

While the waterproof membrane will prevent the jacket from leaking or water from getting inside, when your jacket wets out, moisture (from sweat or condensation) can build up on the interior, causing it to feel moist.

There's a common misconception that, when this happens, the product is faulty because people believe the waterproof membrane is leaking. However, this is most likely not the case; you simply need to clean your jacket and reapply the DWR.

The easiest way to spot when this is happening is to see if water beads off the material's surface or soaks in.

PFC/PFAS usage in modern waterproof and DWR technology

Most modern DWR technology avoids the use of PFCs/PFAS chemicals.

PFC-free means perfluorinated chemical-free. Companies such as Gore-Tex® are also beginning to eliminate these harmful chemicals in their waterproof membranes with technology like Gore-Tex® ePE.

What are PFC/PFAS chemicals?

Perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs) are also known as forever chemicals and cause environmental harm, similar to PFAS.

PFAS means per- or poly-fluorinated alkyl; these are a group of industrial chemicals that also cause detrimental harm to the environment, often through product and garment manufacture.

These chemicals can't break down, so once they reach nature (usually via factory water waste), they stay in the ecosystem and contaminate living organisms, working their way up the food chain. PFAS and PFCs are suspected carcinogens and have been known to affect mammal reproduction and hormone production. Therefore, many leading brands in the outdoor industry are now prioritising cutting out the use of these chemicals entirely to contribute to a more responsible manufacturing process.

How to care for a new waterproof product

PFC/PFAS-free waterproof products still perform effectively. However, they will require more frequent care (washing and reapplying a DWR) to ensure consistency. We stock various care products for this, which you can browse here. If this is your first time doing this, check out our easy how-to guide by clicking here.
