What is the Firewall Jacket?

Don't let the rain stop you. This versatile jacket offers lightweight waterproof protection with a slight stretch to keep you comfortable all day long. It feels luxurious to wear, and has a full technical spec, but without that loud rustly noise of most hardshell jackets. It's the ideal three season shell for hill walks and mountain hikes when the weather isn't on your side.

What is it made of?

The jacket uses a three layer Pertex® Shield construction with a slight stretch. Pertex® Shield is a highly breathable, waterproof fabric designed for use in the mountains when weight and breathability are key. The three layer construction combines waterproof, windproof and breathable membranes, finished with a durable water repellent for extra reinforcement.

Pertex® Shield feels soft and packable, making this jacket perfect even as an emergency layer that you could chuck in your pack without taking up heaps of space.

What are its features?

The helmet compatible hood is designed with plenty of room for helmets underneath, giving climbers and mountaineers extra shelter on exposed routes. You can adjust the hood using the internal cord locks single handedly, so minimum faff is required, allowing you to focus more on your next move. The hood also has a wired and stiffened peak for increased protection, helping to direct the wet weather away from your face.

You can roll the hood away when it's not in use to stop it from flapping around in the wind - simply tuck it into the back of the neck.

Sleeves are articulated, providing extra fabric where you need it most to improve freedom of movement and arm lift. Sleeve articulation helps to stop the sleeves from riding up when they are fully stretched, helping you to stay fully covered on steep ascents. The cuffs are adjustable, they have a hook and loop system to adapt the fit around the wrists or gloves.

One fully vented pit zip sits underneath the arm, on each side, sealed with a YKK® AquaGuard zip. AquaGuard zips are taped to help prevent water seeping through the seams, offering maximum water repellency in more vulnerable sections of the piece. The pit zips are lengthy to provide maximum ventilation during intense activity - perfect for when you're working up a sweat in the mountains.

There's a three pocket configuration for storage, to stow away hill-snacks and valuables like keys or a mobile phone, including one Napoleon chest pocket and two hand pockets. Each pocket is secured with a YKK® AquaGuard zip.

The main entry point is down the centre of the jacket, which again uses a YKK® AquaGuard zip for maximum protection. It zips two ways to adapt the jacket to your activity, giving you more room to move in the hips and waist area, or for maximum ventilation if you're working up a sweat. A fleece lined chin guard is placed at the top to add extra comfort when the jacket is zipped all the way up. The chin guard feels luxuriously soft and silky against the skin.

A dual sided rear hem adjuster with single hand adjustment allows you to cinch in the bottom of the jacket, optimising the fit whilst helping to keep the gusts out and the heat in.

How does it fit?

The Firewall comes up in a regular fit, leaving plenty of room underneath for layering without being too baggy and oversized.

Features:

  • 2-way adjustable helmet compatible hood roll away with concealed internal cord locks and single handed adjustment
  • Wired and stiffened peak for increased weather protection
  • Sleeve articulation for freedom of movement and arm lift
  • 3 external pockets (1x Napoleon/ 2x Hand) using YKK® AquaGuard Zips

Technical Information

Materials: 30D Pertex® Shield 3-Layer construction waterproof technology with fluorocarbon free DWR (120gsm) HH: 20,000mm/MVTR: 20,000 g/m2/24hrs. Main: 100% Polyamide face with Polyurethane membrane and 100% Polyamide backer.

Centre back length (Size M): 78cm / 30.7inch

For best performance:

With any new waterproof, we advise you to wash the product with the appropriate tech wash and reapply a fresh DWR to activate the technology and achieve the best performance from day one.

How does waterproof technology work?

Modern waterproof technology often uses a waterproof membrane sandwiched between layers of fabric and a DWR (Durable Water Repellent) on the outer material.

What is 'wetting out', and how does it affect my waterproof?

DWRs commonly get worn down from contact, whether with your backpack or your fingertips. When the DWR wears down, your waterproof product may begin to 'wet out', meaning the water stops beading off the surface and starts to soak in instead.

While the waterproof membrane will prevent the jacket from leaking or water from getting inside, when your jacket wets out, moisture (from sweat or condensation) can build up on the interior, causing it to feel moist.

There's a common misconception that, when this happens, the product is faulty because people believe the waterproof membrane is leaking. However, this is most likely not the case; you simply need to clean your jacket and reapply the DWR.

The easiest way to spot when this is happening is to see if water beads off the material's surface or soaks in.

PFC/PFAS usage in modern waterproof and DWR technology

Most modern DWR technology avoids the use of PFCs/PFAS chemicals.

PFC-free means perfluorinated chemical-free. Companies such as Gore-Tex® are also beginning to eliminate these harmful chemicals in their waterproof membranes with technology like Gore-Tex® ePE.

What are PFC/PFAS chemicals?

Perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs) are also known as forever chemicals and cause environmental harm, similar to PFAS.

PFAS means per- or poly-fluorinated alkyl; these are a group of industrial chemicals that also cause detrimental harm to the environment, often through product and garment manufacture.

These chemicals can't break down, so once they reach nature (usually via factory water waste), they stay in the ecosystem and contaminate living organisms, working their way up the food chain. PFAS and PFCs are suspected carcinogens and have been known to affect mammal reproduction and hormone production. Therefore, many leading brands in the outdoor industry are now prioritising cutting out the use of these chemicals entirely to contribute to a more responsible manufacturing process.

How to care for a new waterproof product

PFC/PFAS-free waterproof products still perform effectively. However, they will require more frequent care (washing and reapplying a DWR) to ensure consistency. We stock various care products for this, which you can browse here. If this is your first time doing this, check out our easy how-to guide by clicking here.
