What is the Kangri Paclite Plus Jacket?

It's the classic Rab Kangri Jacket in it's most lightweight, packable form! The Kangri Paclite Plus is made with reliable Gore-Tex® Paclite Plus and is fantastic as an emergency layer for general outdoor activities, whether hiking, hill walking, scrambling or even running your daily errands at home.

What is it made of?

The Kangri Paclite Plus is made with reliable 40D 2.5 layer Gore-Tex® Paclite Plus.

Gore-Tex® has engineered their Paclite Plus fabric to be both protective and highly breathable, helping to regulate your temperature and helping to prevent sweat from building up inside.

Paclite Plus is exceptionally thin, packable and lightweight. It doesn't compromise performance (of course, it's Gore-Tex®!) - though lightweight, it's fully waterproof and abrasion resistant so that it can take bumps and scrapes in rugged terrain. This material is also fully windproof, helping to shield you from that nasty wind chill when you find yourself exposed at a higher altitude.

What are its features?

This jacket has a fully adjustable mountain hood which sits close to the skin. You can easily layer a beanie or hoodie underneath and adapt the dimensions to suit your own personal preference using the string adjusters. The hood comes with a built-in stiffened peak at the top to help divert rain away from your face.

It's fastened with a convenient two-way zipper that allows you to zip from the bottom up when fastened if you need a quick heat dump. The zip also has a lower snap fastener that secures the bottom in place. You can even leave the zip undone and the fastener closed if you want maximum ventilation when working hard on a steep ascent or in milder conditions.

There are two YKK® Aquaguard zippered hand pockets that offer plenty of space for gloves, snacks and energy gels. YKK® Aquaguard zips are taped to ensure water doesn't seep through the entry, meaning all your belongings inside will be well protected from the elements.

Two-way pit zips also gives you ventilation options under the arms, perfect for heavier rain as they're placed underneath the arms and won't be exposed to the wet.

Articulated sleeves give you enhanced freedom of movement and allow you to completely lift your arms without feeling restricted or uncomfortable, ideal for technical scrambles or using walking poles!

The cuffs come with anti-snag hook and loop adjusters that allow you to adapt the fit around either bare wrists, chunky gloves or mittens. They're easy to use and extremely durable, so you won't have to worry about them falling apart if you wear this jacket regularly.

A rear hem adjustment allows you to cinch in the bottom of the jacket to retain heat and keep the wind out. The adjuster is mitt friendly - even with the chunkiest of chunky gloves it should still be easy to get hold of.

Finally, all seams are taped accurately to prevent water ingress - it can be easy for rainwater to leak through holes made in the fabric after stitching it together. The taping is refined, neat and not at all bulky, so you won't even notice it's there!

Features:

  • Fully adjustable mountain hood with flexible and stiffened peak
  • 2-way YKK® VISLON® centre front zip with lower snap fastener and fleece lined chin guard for comfort
  • 2 YKK® AquaGuard® zipped hand pockets
  • 2-way full venting YKK® AquaGuard® pit zips
  • Sleeve articulation for freedom of movement and arm lift
  • Anti-snag hook-and-loop adjustable cuffs
  • Dual sided mitt friendly rear hem adjustment
  • Taped seams throughout for complete waterproof protection

For best performance:

With any new waterproof, we advise you to wash the product with the appropriate tech wash and reapply a fresh DWR to activate the technology and achieve the best performance from day one.

How does waterproof technology work?

Modern waterproof technology often uses a waterproof membrane sandwiched between layers of fabric and a DWR (Durable Water Repellent) on the outer material.

What is 'wetting out', and how does it affect my waterproof?

DWRs commonly get worn down from contact, whether with your backpack or your fingertips. When the DWR wears down, your waterproof product may begin to 'wet out', meaning the water stops beading off the surface and starts to soak in instead.

While the waterproof membrane will prevent the jacket from leaking or water from getting inside, when your jacket wets out, moisture (from sweat or condensation) can build up on the interior, causing it to feel moist.

There's a common misconception that, when this happens, the product is faulty because people believe the waterproof membrane is leaking. However, this is most likely not the case; you simply need to clean your jacket and reapply the DWR.

The easiest way to spot when this is happening is to see if water beads off the material's surface or soaks in.

PFC/PFAS usage in modern waterproof and DWR technology

Most modern DWR technology avoids the use of PFCs/PFAS chemicals.

PFC-free means perfluorinated chemical-free. Companies such as Gore-Tex® are also beginning to eliminate these harmful chemicals in their waterproof membranes with technology like Gore-Tex® ePE.

What are PFC/PFAS chemicals?

Perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs) are also known as forever chemicals and cause environmental harm, similar to PFAS.

PFAS means per- or poly-fluorinated alkyl; these are a group of industrial chemicals that also cause detrimental harm to the environment, often through product and garment manufacture.

These chemicals can't break down, so once they reach nature (usually via factory water waste), they stay in the ecosystem and contaminate living organisms, working their way up the food chain. PFAS and PFCs are suspected carcinogens and have been known to affect mammal reproduction and hormone production. Therefore, many leading brands in the outdoor industry are now prioritising cutting out the use of these chemicals entirely to contribute to a more responsible manufacturing process.

How to care for a new waterproof product

PFC/PFAS-free waterproof products still perform effectively. However, they will require more frequent care (washing and reapplying a DWR) to ensure consistency. We stock various care products for this, which you can browse here. If this is your first time doing this, check out our easy how-to guide by clicking here.
