What is the Latok Extreme GTX?
You've probably heard of the regular Latok, but what's the Latok Extreme?
This jacket is Rab's most durable waterproof shell jacket. It's built for gnarly mountain climbs (we're talking big time ascents) and expeditions where functionality is at the pinnacle of your wardrobe. It's a proper Scottish winter jacket, designed to do all the work, so you can just sit back and enjoy the ride.
What is it made of?
The Latok Extreme GTX is built using 80D recycled Gore-Tex® Pro with Most Breathable technology and Gore DWR. Bit of a mouthful, right? Basically, it's a three layer fabric with added durability, breathability and an extra DWR (Durable Water Repellent), designed to withstand abrasion in the toughest terrain. It offers maximum waterproof and windproof protection whilst still being extremely breathable. Thanks to its versatility, it's perfect for mountain use! It can keep you comfortable in changeable environments whilst minimising the accumulation of sweat, keeping you cool during high output activity.
80 denier is a pretty hefty denier for a shell jacket, so you know you can rough it up without worry. It's thick enough for Highland hikes or climbs where it's most likely to take a beating, yet not too heavy or uncomfortable. It has a Hydrostatic Head rating of 28,000mm, which is exceptional for a shell jacket (the average rating is usually between 10,000mm and 20,000mm).
Gore-Tex® Pro seam taping is used on the inside of the jacket to ensure that no water can seep inside through the stitching.
What are its features?
Starting at the top of the jacket, there's a helmet compatible TriPoint Hood with a wind collar, crown and face adjustment, that pull the hood in for maximum coverage from the elements. The adjusters use concealed internal cordlocks and haptic, mitt friendly pullers, that are low bulk and lightweight yet super easy to use, even with numb fingers. The hood has a wired, stiffened peak at the top, which helps to redirect rain away from the face - a feature to be grateful for here in the UK!
Down to the sleeves, you'll notice they are articulated to give off a more natural shape whilst offering improved freedom of movement and arm lift, perfect for climbing and scrambling up steep ascents. The cuffs are extended and have a simple hook and loop adjustment system, allowing you to optimise the fit whilst wearing gloves or mitts.
The four pocket configuration on the exterior is perfect for serious, technical adventures. The pockets have large, wide openings that make them super easy to access, and the zipper fastenings operate really smoothly. You'll only need to use one hand to navigate the pockets, so if your other is busy holding onto ropes or an ice axe, less time will be wasted fumbling around. Each pocket has a YKK® Aquaguard zip, which is also waterproof to ensure none of your valuables get wet on the move.
Speaking of zips, the centre front zip operates two ways, allowing extra ventilation without entirely undoing the jacket, so it won't be flapping around all over the place. The two way zip can also come in really handy on steep ascents, where you may need more freedom of movement around the hips and lower body. At the top of the centre fastening is a fleece lined chin guard, so when it’s fastened all the way up, it feels silky smooth next to the skin.
Underneath the arms are two-way fully venting pit zips, also with YKK® Aquaguard zips, so if you're feeling a little clammy, pull these open and embrace that icy breeze.
Inside the jacket are two more pockets, one zipped and one mesh, to carry more precious cargo that you'd prefer to keep a little closer to you, like a mobile phone, keys, or extra cash for emergencies.
Finally, at the bottom hem of the jacket, a dual-sided, mitt friendly rear hem adjustment allows you to cinch the jacket in further, helping to keep the weather out, retaining warmth and reducing the overall bulk of the garment.
How does it fit?
The Latok Extreme comes in a regular fit. Regular fit offers a little extra room, maximising freedom of movement and allowing you to wear your own effective layering system underneath, without feeling restricted.
