At a temperature rating of -57⁰C, the ExpedMegaMatMax 15 is primarily designed for expedition and polar use – however, with an incredibly luscious 15cm of cushion and a soft tricot upper, this mat suits out of the car camping, nights in the van or anyone else who wants the bestnightssleep ever!
What is it made of?
Material:TheMegaMatMax 15 uses two different weights of fabric – a soft, 50 D tricot nylon that feelsexcellentnext to skin, and a tougher 75 D polyester on the base of the mat for added durability. The two different weights of fabric ensure maximum comfort without compromising on durability.
Insulation:The 15cm deep air chambers are filled with16kg/m²of open-celled PU foamcalledOeko-Texthat hashorizontal air channels which reduces the weight without sacrificing thickness or comfort. This is what makes the mat so warm!
What are the features?
They are easy to use. To inflate, simply open the inflate valve and allow the foam to rebound back to its original form (it's good to note that withit'sfirst use the mat will not self-inflate due to beingrolled from factory. It will need to be left inflated for the foam to relax), thus drawing air into themat. The mat includes a minipump to add more air if the mat isn’t to your preferred firmness, or if you are just in a bit more of a hurry (whilst it is self-inflating to a degree, the mini pump really does help give it that little extra, so don't forget it at home!). Simply attach it to the inflate valve and perform a bit of "CPR". Alternatively, if after a few minutes you find that your bed is too firm, pressure can be fine-tuned by opening the inflation value and poking your finger inside whilst lay on the mat; a few gentle taps on the internal valve seal should do the trick. Once you have achieved your desired firmness, close the valve back up and it's off to sleep.
Pack down is now a lot quicker and a lot less faff as Exped have increased the size of the deflation value and updated the storage sack to allow for side entry. Just like your sleeping bag, if you aren’t using the mat for sometimewe recommend that it's stored unrolled with the valves open (under a bed for instance) to ensure the internal foam retains its expansion.
What is the R-value?
This matt has an R-Value of10.6 which in real terms means that this matt will keep you toasty right down toan amazing -57⁰C. R-Values are an international standard of insulation and (in simple terms) indicate the materials ability to reduce heat flow through conduction, radiation or convection. Therefore, the higher the R-Value, the lower the heat transfer and the greater the insulation properties of the material.
