What are the Triolet Pants?
The Triolet Pants are tough, waterproof trousers designed to provide exceptional protection, comfort and breathability for snowy alpine conditions and wet mountain adventures.
What are they made of?
Patagonia has built these trousers using bluesign® approved, three-layer, 100% recycled polyester Gore-Tex® ePE with a tricot backer and a DWR (durable water repellent). They also feature reinforcement panels made with two-layer recycled nylon laminate with a PU coating and DWR finish. All materials, coatings, and treatments are also PFC-free.
That was quite a mouthful, right? Let's break it down.
Gore-Tex® ePE and PFC-free products - This updated Gore® material uses an ePE membrane, a key milestone in the leading brand's responsible performance journey. If you were wondering, ePE stands for Expanded Polyethene, which is light and thin yet durable and PFC-free.
If you're familiar with Trekitt descriptions, you may have seen that 'PFC-free' phrase floating around before. PFCs are per or poly-fluorinated chemicals, aka 'forever chemicals', that stay permanently in the environment and cause lasting damage to our ecosystems. Many companies are working towards a completely PFC-free future, so this is quite a breakthrough for the Gore-Tex® brand! In addition, this membrane has a reduced carbon footprint, as it uses laminates with a lower-mass membrane and select textiles, making it an ideal choice for more environmentally conscious adventurers.
The membrane itself provides complete waterproof and windproof protection, with ample breathability to prevent sweat and condensation from building up inside, helping regulate body temperature. Overall, it has been rigorously tested to ensure a long-lasting product life, which adds to those eco-friendly credentials, as you won't need to buy a replacement jacket for a long time, saving energy, resources and waste.
Tricot backer—The tricot backer provides a smoother finish on the inside of the trousers, increasing comfort and making it easier to slide the Triolet over other layers when necessary without adding excessive weight.
PFC-free DWR (durable water repellent) - A DWR encourages rain and light snow to bead off the face fabric instead of soaking in and causing the jacket to 'wet out'. This enhances the material's breathability, ensuring moisture or condensation doesn't build up inside, leaving you feeling clammy and uncomfortable.
PU coating—PU coatings reinforce fabric for optimum abrasion resistance and durability, helping it last longer.
This product is also made in a Fair Trade Factory™, giving Patagonia more control of the operations in the factories they choose to work with. Patagonia proudly offers more Fair Trade styles than any other apparel brand in the current market. But how does it work? Patagonia pays a premium for every item made in one of these factories, and this money goes directly to the factory workers. A democratically elected committee of Fair Trade workers will decide how this extra money gets spent in each Fair Trade factory. The program also promotes worker health and safety, and social and environmental compliance, while encouraging healthier dialogue between workers and management.
What are their features?
An articulated design and a gusseted crotch provide under-harness comfort and ample freedom of movement for mountain activities.
The separating waist has a two-snap closure, a zip fly, belt loops and interior adjustable elastic tabs for a more customised fit. Side zips also fully separate the trousers. The fastening uses two-way side zippers secured with snap tabs at the waist and cuffs, making for easy on-and-off over big boots or extra layers and extra ventilation when working hard.
Two welted, waterproof hand pockets with vertical fastenings are perfect for storing small essentials like snacks and energy gels. The vertical fastening also helps to keep rain and snow out of the pocket, as there's less chance of it falling through the opening.
The double-cuff design has a durable scuff guard and a separating internal gaiter fastened with a hook-and-loop closure. The gaiter also features gripper elastic to keep it in place and tie-down loops for extra security.
The built-in RECCO® reflector increases your safety tenfold by making you more searchable to rescuers in worst-case scenarios, without the need for power or manual activation and without adding weight or bulk to the product. RECCO® technology was initially designed in response to an avalanche tragedy and launched in 1983. It's a two-part system that enables rapid, directional pinpointing of your precise location with a harmonic radar, helping you feel more protected during extreme activities in remote environments.
