What is the M10 Anorak?

It's a waterproof pullover jacket designed to provide ample protection in the mountains when climbing and mountaineering. The M10 Anorak is made with specialised fabrics and has Patagonia's H2No® seal of approval to ensure that this anorak is built to last. It's also bluesign® certified and made in a Fair Trade Certified Factory™, further boosting credentials.

What is it made of?

The M10 Anorak uses a PFC-free, three-layer recycled nylon ripstop with an Xpore™ membrane and PFC-free DWR (durable water repellent).

Xpore™ is a nanoporous membrane that helps to amplify breathability by breathing passively. If you want to get a little techy, this means that the material doesn't rely on pressure differentials from the inside of the material to the outside to transport moisture through the membrane. Therefore, even if you're not super warm or working up a sweat, the membrane can still wick away moisture from the inside and regulate your temperature more efficiently. The passive style of breathability is perfect for climbing jackets as often you'll find yourself static, for example, when belaying.

The PFC-free durable water repellent (DWR) adds to the material's water resistance, encouraging light rain and snow to bead away.

Perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs) used in earlier DWRs can't 'break down', so once they reach nature (usually via water waste from factories), they stay out in the environment and contaminate living organisms, working their way up the food chain. PFC's are suspected carcinogens and have been known to affect reproduction and hormone production in mammals. For these reasons, many brands are now using PFC-free alternatives to reduce the impact manufacturing has on our beautiful planet.

The M10 Anorak is bluesign® approved, meaning it's manufactured in a way that is safe for the environment, workers and consumers. bluesign® certifications ensure that the materials used avoid harmful substances, use reduced air and water emissions, increase resource productivity, and the production line is more transparent and trustworthy.

This product is also made in a Fair Trade Factory™, giving Patagonia more control of the operations in the factories they choose to work with. Patagonia proudly offers more Fair Trade styles than any other apparel brand in the current market. But how does it work? Patagonia pays a premium for every item made in one of these factories, and this money goes directly to the factory workers. A democratically elected committee of Fair Trade workers will decide how this extra money gets spent in each Fair Trade factory. The program also promotes worker health and safety, and social and environmental compliance, while encouraging healthier dialogue between workers and management.

What are its features?

This jacket is designed with a slim fit to help reduce overall volume for precision and enhanced moisture-wicking performance.

A 3/4 length zip allows you to easily slip the anorak on over your head, whether you're wearing a helmet or not, and provides ample ventilation should you need it.

There's a helmet-compatible hood, which makes plenty of room for key protective gear. The hood features an adjuster to allow for a more precise fit no matter your head/helmet shape or size, allowing you to shelter from the rain a little easier.

A zipped chest pocket provides storage for essentials like snacks, energy gels, gloves or tape.

A built-in RECCO® reflector increases your safety tenfold by making you more searchable to rescuers in worst-case scenarios, without the need for power or manual activation and without adding weight or bulk to the product. RECCO® technology was initially designed in response to an avalanche tragedy and launched in 1983. It's a two-part system that enables rapid, directional pinpointing of your precise location with a harmonic radar, helping you feel more protected during extreme activities in remote environments.

For best performance:

With any new waterproof, we advise you to wash the product with the appropriate tech wash and reapply a fresh DWR to activate the technology and achieve the best performance from day one.

How does waterproof technology work?

Modern waterproof technology often uses a waterproof membrane sandwiched between layers of fabric and a DWR (Durable Water Repellent) on the outer material.

What is 'wetting out', and how does it affect my waterproof?

DWRs commonly get worn down from contact, whether with your backpack or your fingertips. When the DWR wears down, your waterproof product may begin to 'wet out', meaning the water stops beading off the surface and starts to soak in instead.

While the waterproof membrane will prevent the jacket from leaking or water from getting inside, when your jacket wets out, moisture (from sweat or condensation) can build up on the interior, causing it to feel moist.

There's a common misconception that, when this happens, the product is faulty because people believe the waterproof membrane is leaking. However, this is most likely not the case; you simply need to clean your jacket and reapply the DWR.

The easiest way to spot when this is happening is to see if water beads off the material's surface or soaks in.

PFC/PFAS usage in modern waterproof and DWR technology

Most modern DWR technology avoids the use of PFCs/PFAS chemicals.

PFC-free means perfluorinated chemical-free. Companies such as Gore-Tex® are also beginning to eliminate these harmful chemicals in their waterproof membranes with technology like Gore-Tex® ePE.

What are PFC/PFAS chemicals?

Perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs) are also known as forever chemicals and cause environmental harm, similar to PFAS.

PFAS means per- or poly-fluorinated alkyl; these are a group of industrial chemicals that also cause detrimental harm to the environment, often through product and garment manufacture.

These chemicals can't break down, so once they reach nature (usually via factory water waste), they stay in the ecosystem and contaminate living organisms, working their way up the food chain. PFAS and PFCs are suspected carcinogens and have been known to affect mammal reproduction and hormone production. Therefore, many leading brands in the outdoor industry are now prioritising cutting out the use of these chemicals entirely to contribute to a more responsible manufacturing process.

How to care for a new waterproof product

PFC/PFAS-free waterproof products still perform effectively. However, they will require more frequent care (washing and reapplying a DWR) to ensure consistency. We stock various care products for this, which you can browse here. If this is your first time doing this, check out our easy how-to guide by clicking here.
