What is the Taiss Light Mid GTX?
The Taiss Light Mid GTX are the new generation of mountaineering boots. Yes, really! Thanks to the mix of quality materials and innovative technology, they're incredibly lightweight, crampon-compatible and completely waterproof, designed to focus on weight, durability and performance for alpine terrain.
What are they made of?
Outer: These boots are made with a seamless schoeller® softshell, giving the shoe unparalleled flexibility without compromising their longevity. This softshell material is low in weight yet can withstand bumps and scrapes in rugged terrain, further enhanced by the seamless construction, which minimises weight from stitching whilst reducing the risk of seams rubbing/chafing.
Lining: Gore-Tex® lining provides ample waterproof protection for wet or snowy mountain days. Though effective, this lining is still incredibly breathable and helps to prevent sweat and moisture build-up when working hard. This Gore-Tex® membrane runs right into the tongue of the boots to ensure water won't seep through any fastenings for maximum shielding.
Midsole: The midsole is made with incredibly lightweight carbon fibre. Carbon fibre is a low-density material, which is why it feels virtually weightless to lift. It has a high strength-to-weight ratio and therefore works well underfoot without snapping or breaking. Using carbon fibre in the midsole also provides high-performance response and control for precision in every step, synonymous with the Taiss boot.
Outsole: A Vibram® Litebase sole reduces the bulk and weight of the outsole without compromising performance and grip on rock, ice and snow. Vibram® soles are renowned for their exceptional durability, reassuring you that you're in safe hands, or should I say, safe shoes.
In terms of sustainability, you should also know that Mammut works with FairWear to ensure safe, ethical working conditions in their factories, helping protect workers' rights and being considerate and sustainable with their processes.
What are their features?
Weighing a mere 550g (Size 8.5 UK), these boots are some of the lightest mountaineering boots on the market. However, they certainly don't skimp on performance!
Mammut Georganic® 3D technology means that all parts of the boot in contact with the foot are designed for specific anatomical features, adding comfort and precision in every step.
Asymmetric lacing follows the foot down to the tip, giving you a more precise system that allows you to fasten the boots more accurately, helping to keep your foot in place and minimising volume where possible.
The laces use a two-zone system which you can adjust to accommodate different situations and activities, whether mountaineering or alpine climbing.
A mono-tongue construction improves overall comfort and reduces the pressure points around the top of the foot. There's also a neoprene cuff gaiter to protect your ankles and feet from the white stuff. This unique cuff provides additional comfort and helps to stop the top of the boots from rubbing as you move.
You can use these boots with semi-automatic crampons, and if you were wondering, they have a B2 rating for flex.
After years and years of use, instead of throwing them away, the Taiss Light Mid GTX have an easy-resole design that means you can give them a new lease of life without it costing the earth (quite literally!) - saving them from landfill and some extra pennies too.
