What is the Nordwand Advanced HS Hooded Jacket?

It's a burly hardshell jacket built for advanced alpine trips and mountaineering adventures in challenging locations. The Nordwand Advanced HS offers a perfect balance of weather protection, technical performance and pack volume to suit multi-day excursions and mountain expeditions.

What is it made of?

The jacket is made with strong 30D nylon Gore-Tex® Pro with 'Most Breathable' technology.

Nylon can easily withstand bumps and scrapes from rugged terrain and jagged rocks without compromising weight, performance and packability.

Gore-Tex® Pro offers exceptional waterproof protection for optimum defence against the elements. With the built-in 'Most Breathable' technology, it's of course also highly breathable to help regulate temperature when you're working hard.

What are its features?

The hood of this jacket is helmet compatible, making it easy to add a climbing helmet underneath when you're on the ropes. It has a reinforced peak at the top to offer extra protection against rain, helping draw it away from your face, and a three-point adjustment system to optimise the fit according to your activities, layering system, head or helmet shape, and size.

The hem is also adjustable. Both adjustments use one-hand cords with CHOAESIVE® stoppers for easy, precise adjustment, even when you're wearing gloves or have numb fingers!

The built-in chin protector uses a soft microfleece that feels lovely against the skin, helping prevent rubbing or chafing when the zip is fully fastened and material is resting against the face.

The front fastening uses a chunky YKK® Vislon two-way zip which allows you to undo the jacket from the bottom for extra ventilation or to make a climbing harness more accessible.

Speaking of climbing harnesses, there are two harness- and backpack-compatible front pockets for essentials like snacks, energy gels or a GPS device. These pockets have cross-over access making it easier to get in and out, and are fastened with water repellent zippers for added weather resistance. There's also an internal zippered chest pocket for smaller valuables like keys, a mobile phone or emergency cash.

Underarm pit zips provide an effective way to dump some heat without opening the front of the jacket - ideal for exposed routes where the weather and wind may be harsher. Like the other zips, these are also water repellent for added protection.

Cuffs are glove compatible and adjustable. They use a high-quality Hypalon hook and loop system, which is easy to use and allows you to get an accurate fit every time.

Finally, the construction uses Mammut's very own High Reach Technology™ to promote unrestricted freedom of movement when climbing. It helps to stop the jacket from rising up and exposing skin if you're stretching out.

Features:

  • Underarm ventilation with water-repellent 2-way zipper
  • MAMMUT High Reach Technology™ for unrestricted freedom of movement when climbing
  • Chin protector made from soft microfleece
  • Helmet-compatible hood with reinforced peak and 3-point adjustment
  • Internal chest pocket with zipper
  • Waterproof YKK VISLON® 2-way front for smooth operation
  • 2 climbing harness- and backpack-compatible front pockets with cross-over access and water-repellent zippers
  • Gore-Tex® Pro material with "most breathable" technology - the perfect combination of weather protection and breathability
  • One-hand adjustable drawstring cords with COHAESIVE® stoppers for easy and precise adjustment of hem and hood - even when wearing gloves
  • Glove-compatible, adjustable cuffs with high-quality Hypalon hook and loop fasteners

For best performance:

With any new waterproof, we advise you to wash the product with the appropriate tech wash and reapply a fresh DWR to activate the technology and achieve the best performance from day one.

How does waterproof technology work?

Modern waterproof technology often uses a waterproof membrane sandwiched between layers of fabric and a DWR (Durable Water Repellent) on the outer material.

What is 'wetting out', and how does it affect my waterproof?

DWRs commonly get worn down from contact, whether with your backpack or your fingertips. When the DWR wears down, your waterproof product may begin to 'wet out', meaning the water stops beading off the surface and starts to soak in instead.

While the waterproof membrane will prevent the jacket from leaking or water from getting inside, when your jacket wets out, moisture (from sweat or condensation) can build up on the interior, causing it to feel moist.

There's a common misconception that, when this happens, the product is faulty because people believe the waterproof membrane is leaking. However, this is most likely not the case; you simply need to clean your jacket and reapply the DWR.

The easiest way to spot when this is happening is to see if water beads off the material's surface or soaks in.

PFC/PFAS usage in modern waterproof and DWR technology

Most modern DWR technology avoids the use of PFCs/PFAS chemicals.

PFC-free means perfluorinated chemical-free. Companies such as Gore-Tex® are also beginning to eliminate these harmful chemicals in their waterproof membranes with technology like Gore-Tex® ePE.

What are PFC/PFAS chemicals?

Perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs) are also known as forever chemicals and cause environmental harm, similar to PFAS.

PFAS means per- or poly-fluorinated alkyl; these are a group of industrial chemicals that also cause detrimental harm to the environment, often through product and garment manufacture.

These chemicals can't break down, so once they reach nature (usually via factory water waste), they stay in the ecosystem and contaminate living organisms, working their way up the food chain. PFAS and PFCs are suspected carcinogens and have been known to affect mammal reproduction and hormone production. Therefore, many leading brands in the outdoor industry are now prioritising cutting out the use of these chemicals entirely to contribute to a more responsible manufacturing process.

How to care for a new waterproof product

PFC/PFAS-free waterproof products still perform effectively. However, they will require more frequent care (washing and reapplying a DWR) to ensure consistency. We stock various care products for this, which you can browse here. If this is your first time doing this, check out our easy how-to guide by clicking here.
