What are the Baggies™ Shorts?
Baggies™ Shorts are a classic Patagonia product renowned for their comfort, functionality, and versatility. They work just as well around town as they would for a casual day on the hill or even an afternoon in the water and look great with any outfit, making them a sure summer staple.
What are they made of?
These shorts are constructed with NetPlus®, which comprises 100% postconsumer recycled nylon faille made from recycled fishing nets.
NetPlus® is Bureo's signature material. As mentioned, it's made from postconsumer recycled fishing nets, meaning it helps reduce one of the most harmful forms of ocean plastic pollution while still empowering fishing communities worldwide. The material is fully traceable and created in partnership with fishermen and women to provide a more circular solution for end-of-life nets, reducing the amount of plastic entering the ocean and making the most of what is otherwise an incredibly usable material.
Materials are treated with a PFC/PFAS-free DWR (durable water repellent). PFC-free means perfluorinated chemical-free. Perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs), commonly used to add water repellent to textiles, are also known as forever chemicals and cause environmental harm, similar to PFAS.
PFAS means per- or poly-fluorinated alkyl; these are a group of industrial chemicals that also cause detrimental harm to the environment, often through product and garment manufacture.
These chemicals can't break down, so once they reach nature (usually via factory water waste), they stay in the ecosystem and contaminate living organisms, working their way up the food chain. PFAS and PFCs are suspected carcinogens and have been known to affect mammal reproduction and hormone production. Therefore, many leading brands in the outdoor industry are now prioritising cutting out the use of these chemicals entirely to contribute to a more responsible manufacturing process.
The main fabric is also bluesign® approved, meaning it's manufactured in a way that is safe for the environment, workers and consumers. bluesign® certifications ensure that the materials used avoid harmful substances, use reduced air and water emissions, increase resource productivity, and the production line is more transparent and trustworthy.
This product is also made in a Fair Trade Factory™, giving Patagonia more control of the operations in the factories they choose to work with. Patagonia proudly offers more Fair Trade styles than any other apparel brand in the current market. But how does it work? Patagonia pays a premium for every item made in one of these factories, and this money goes directly to the factory workers. A democratically elected committee of Fair Trade workers will decide how this extra money gets spent in each Fair Trade factory. The program also promotes worker healthand safety, and social and environmental compliance, while encouraging healthier dialogue between workers and management.
What are the features?
These shorts feature a mesh liner, which dries quickly, making these shorts suitable for wild swimming and days on the beach.
An elasticated waistband with an internal drawcord provides a more customisable fit.
Vertical pockets reduce drag in the water and feature drain-and-dry mesh corners in the pocket bags to ensure your pockets don't collect water. The right-rear pocket also features a snap closure for extra security, making it ideal for a mobile phone, keys, or wallet (when you're on dry land, of course).
The 5" inseam provides plenty of coverage for outdoor and casual activities, making these great all-round shorts for the summer.
