What are the Terravia Alpine Pants?
Made in a Fair Trade Certified Factory™, the Terravia Alpine Pants are lightweight softshell trousers with a versatile design, best suited to alpine and mountain activities above the tree line. Their comfortable construction also makes them ideal for everyday wear and outdoor lifestyles all year round.
What are they made of?
These trousers are made with 86% recycled material to help lower environmental impact. They contain a blend of recycled polyester and spandex dobby weave with a four-way stretch to enhance comfort and provide exceptional freedom of movement. The material is finished with a PFC-free DWR (durable water repellent) to encourage light rain and snow to bead off the fabric. However, please note that this does not make them 100% waterproof.
Perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs) used in earlier DWRs can't 'break down', so once they reach nature (usually via water waste from factories), they stay in the environment and contaminate living organisms, working their way up the food chain. PFC's are suspected carcinogens and have been known to affect reproduction and hormone production in mammals. For these reasons, many brands are now using PFC-free alternatives to reduce the impact manufacturing has on our beautiful planet.
The fabric is bluesign® approved, meaning it's manufactured in a way that is safe for the environment, workers and consumers. bluesign® certifications ensure that the materials used avoid harmful substances, use reduced air and water emissions, increase resource productivity, and the production line is more transparent and trustworthy.
This product is also made in a Fair Trade Certified Factory™, giving Patagonia more control of the operations in the factories they choose to work with. Patagonia proudly offers more Fair Trade styles than any other apparel brand in the current market. But how does it work? The brand pays a premium for every item made in one of these factories, and this money goes directly to the factory workers. A democratically elected committee of Fair Trade workers will decide how this extra money gets spent in each Fair Trade factory. The program also promotes worker health and safety, and social and environmental compliance, while encouraging healthier dialogue between workers and management.
What are their features?
The articulated shaping of these trousers allows for ultimate mobility on long approaches, hikes and climbs. Their streamlined design also ensures maximum comfort when wearing a harness.
A low-profile waistband with a separating zip fly and integrated, adjustable belt ensures an improved fit, comfort, and functionality without excess weight and bulk, even when wearing a backpack.
Mesh pockets allow you to stow small essentials like a GPS, snacks, or energy gels and achieve extra ventilation when left open. Each pocket is strategically placed for a lie-flat construction under a climbing harness. The right thigh pocket also sits comfortably underneath harness leg loops for accessibility. Clever, huh?
Scuff panels increase durability to help your trousers last longer, reinforcing high-wear areas. Cuffs are also adjustable, allowing you to cinch in extra volume to help prevent trousers from snagging on jagged rock or crampons.
