What is the DAS Light Hoodie?
The DAS Light Hoodie is a lightweight belay jacket designed for cold, changeable mountain conditions. It keeps you warm even when wet and is made with light, packable materials to deliver an optimum warmth-to-weight ratio.
What is it made of?
The outer of this jacket uses 10D Pertex® Quantum Pro, which is exceptionally lightweight and weather-resistant, while the lining uses bluesign® approved Pertex® Quantum. A PU dry coating also covers the outer shell to increase abrasion resistance and durability, and both materials are finished with a PFC-free DWR (durable water repellent). PlumaFill insulation sandwiched between the material adds warmth without excessive weight and, unlike down, even performs when wet.
Can't quite catch the lingo? Here's a quick breakdown:
Pertex® Quantum/Quantum Pro - Combining 35 years of experience in the precise weaving of fine and technical yarns, this material uses a tightly woven construction that allows insulation to fully loft. Pertex® Quantum fabrics are designed to trap still air, helping to warm the insulation and maintain its efficiency whilst creating a light, protective barrier from the elements.
bluesign® approved - bluesign® approval means the fabric is manufactured in a way that is safe for the environment, workers and consumers. bluesign® certifications ensure that the materials used avoid harmful substances, use reduced air and water emissions, increase resource productivity, and the production line is more transparent and trustworthy.
PFC-free - PFC-free means perfluorinated chemical free. Perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs), used to add water repellent to textiles, aren't able to break down, so once they reach nature via factory water waste, they stay in the ecosystem and contaminate living organisms, working their way up the food chain. PFC's are suspected carcinogens and have been known to affect mammal reproduction and hormone production. Therefore, many leading brands in the outdoor industry are now prioritising cutting out the use of these chemicals entirely to contribute to a more responsible manufacturing process.
DWR (durable water repellent) - allows light rain and snow to bead off the fabric instead of allowing it to soak in, enhancing the product's breathability further whilst keeping some of the wet weather out! However, please note that DWR doesn't make this product fully waterproof.
Plumafill - Plumafill is a vegan, synthetic insulation that mimics the qualities of down to provide exceptional warmth with a high level of packability. It's made with 100% recycled polyester, helping to reduce its environmental impact without compromise. Synthetic insulation is beneficial as it also stays warm when wet (unlike down), meaning you can stay well protected no matter how soggy you get! Therefore, Plumafill gives you the best of both worlds in terms of performance, making this jacket suitable for virtually any adventure in unpredictable conditions.
This product is also made in a Fair Trade Factory™, giving Patagonia more control of the operations in the factories they choose to work with. Patagonia proudly offers more Fair Trade styles than any other apparel brand in the current market. But how does it work? Patagonia pays a premium for every item made in one of these factories, and this money goes directly to the factory workers. A democratically elected committee of Fair Trade workers will decide how this extra money gets spent in each Fair Trade factory. The program also promotes worker health and safety, and social and environmental compliance, while encouraging healthier dialogue between workers and management.
What are its features?
Thanks to the combination of the weather-resistant hung face fabric and internal, innovative quilting construction, the warmth of this jacket is enhanced tenfold. These design elements work in unison to stabilise and maximise the loft of the insulation with minimal stitching, which also helps prevent cold gaps from forming in the jacket.
An alpine-helmet-compatible, insulated hood provides warmth and coverage when needed; you can adjust the hood easily with just one hand using the single-pull cord adjuster. Stretchy binding on the front of the hood helps to keep in the warmth.
A two-way, centre-front zip lets you unzip the jacket from the bottom to access a climbing harness or dump heat quickly. The zip also has an internal wind flap for extra weather protection.
For storage, there's an external left-chest pocket and two handwarmer pockets, perfect for stowing small essentials like energy gels, snacks and gloves. You can also stuff the entire jacket into the left pocket for quick and easy on-the-go storage.
A low-profile, elasticated hem and cuffs help seal in the warmth for exposed conditions and static activities like belaying.
